Quad Cortex Power Supply Recommendations

I’m looking to replace the stock PSU that comes with the QC. I’ve read various threads regarding CIOKS D7 and Walrus Audio and seem to get mixed reviews. Anyone have solid options for me to look at?

Thanks in advance

So many threads and posts in this forum about power supplies. My solution is in the thread below:

Reeeeeally make sure you want a DC7 before dropping >$200 on one.

I’m using a Walrus Canvas HP Power Plus to power everything on my board and it works fine so far. It comes with all kinds of leads for almost everything.

It has 2 switchable (9/12) 3 A outputs - which is what I needed for the QC and the Idoru, 6 9V outputs, 1 USB-C output and has a output to chain a second device if need be.

Total budget of the brick is 96W which is plenty enough for everything on my board.

The only “tricky” bit was to drill my board to accommodate the 4 fixing bolts → a template would be great (I fixed that by creating my own).

Really wish these didn’t have a separate big power supply. Kind of defeats the purpose of even having this size wise

Careful. 48W rating for the whole Canvas Power 8 unit does not mean that the two 12V outputs can pump out 4A total (2A each).

We know the QC averages around 1.8A–ballpark figure, not an exact number for all users–so that would mean each 12V output is pulling about 0.9A when paralleled.

Unfortunately, Walrus Audio does not provide a current rating for the two variable outputs [which irritates my engineering sense, grrrrr]. Since most of the 9V outputs are rated at 500 mA (9V * 0.5A = 4.5W each), then assuming the same power rating it would be 375 mA each for the 12V outputs. But they didn’t specify.

You may be running your QC “just fine” on this power supply, but please know that you’re operating in a gray area where you may be pulling more current through the variable (12V) outputs than they’re designed to handle, even though the total amount of power for your whole board may be well under 48W.

Walrus Audio’s Canvas Power HP and HP+ are specifically designed to output 12V 3A power for units like a QC.

Looking at anything online for this power supply does not indicate that it will provide the correct amount of power for the QC from those outlets. Only stuff I saw had the rating at like 500ma (like you said). Wouldn’t risk it with one of these, and would definitely go for the ones you recommended instead

it makes changing it very easy if it goes bad!

Sorry I should have mentioned : it’s the Canvas HP Power Plus version, the 2 switched outputs are rated at 3 A under 12V each

I stand corrected, I am using the HP Power Plus version. Good catch, thanks!

Easier than an IEC cable?

I mean if the power supply goes bad and it’s in the device it gets complicated vs the external brick,

(Having a spare of which is a pretty good idea). And the brick has an IEC cable grid side. Personal taste in the end.

OK, glad to hear, cheers.

Hola. Yo tengo el Cioks DC7 + el Cioks Crush, para dejar Las entradas del DC7 libres para otros pedales.

Me gasté una pasta, pero creo que es una solución muy profesional. El Quad Cortex, no se merece menos.

I purchased this: 12v Power supply and this Polarity Adapter for about $20 total and has worked great for 5 years now…

How does that work with one side being 2.1mm (polarity adapter) and the other being 2.5mm (power supply)? Just curious

The polarity adapter inter (male) is 2.1mm which fits perfectly onto the 2.1mm power supply output (female). The power supply outer is 2.5mm which really doesn’t matter as long as the final output to the QC is 2.1mm which it is. I have purchased 2 sets of these: one for home & the other for away and both have worked flawlessly for years - I hope this helps :slightly_smiling_face:

@JCM800’s power supply from Amazon has a spring-loaded contact inside the connector barrel which can accommodate both 2.5 mm and 2.1 mm pins. I’ve never seen this before, but honestly it’s pretty cool.

Thanks for the clarification!

You cut right to the chase and explained it far better than I did - thank you DC :call_me_hand:

I agree! DC!. I’m not a big fan of barrel jacks/plugs in general. Having so many versions and no way to identify the pin diameter (other than measuring), this is a pretty slick solution.
