Midi and Expression Pedal at the same time?

Hey Guys, the update is great. Has anybody a solution for switching Presets via Midi Controller and now use an Expression Pedal for the Wah? Midi only works via trs and so there are no input for the Expression. Expression via midi also not work. Has anybody an idea?

I do my MIDI preset switching from a laptop plugged into the Nano USB. It also provides power. I have an expression pedal plugged into the Nano with TRS.

I would love to see expression control via MIDI in the future, but this works for now.

I found something like this on Reddit.
Chocolate plus midi switcher:

  • dc power into USB c input in chocolate
  • switch into Host mode (switcher on a back)
  • connect Chocolate Host USB A to USB c in Nano (this will send midi commands)
  • expression pedal into trs. And also set trs in Nano as exp pedal.

Ok thanks…. I will try a usb midi host instead… but the idea is good.

I found a Solution…
An USB Midi Host Box like CME H2Midi Pro (50€)give you the possibility to use a cheap Midicontroller like Ampero Control and Change the Midi Signal into USB-C for the Nano… so you can switch Presets via USB-C and use the TRS Input for Expressionpedal. Maybe the Behringer USB-Host work aswell.
I‘m happy

Good! A bit more expensive than chocolate plus (25$) but more flexible with other midi switchers

Hi just, ordered Behringer MIDI host and it works!

Thanks, so I will try it too. It‘s smaller and cheaper than cme…

Did you get this set up to work?

No… but i‘m not sure if it was damaged because the lED blinked all the time.
I‘m Happy with the cme because it runs with normal pedalpower.

Hello @vitoverde, can you please share how you connected and configured the Behringer MIDI host?

I have the cme 2h not the Behringer.
I don’t had to configure it… pluged in and it has worked.

I have a FCB1010 midi controller (uno chip). It does work fine for preset changes using TRS cable type A (PC) and effect toggle (CCs) but could not make it work the expression pedals too (configured to CC1 values). My FCB1010 does work fine with my macbook to and the pedal is configured correctly. https://youtu.be/8uxOANxKT6U . According to Neural DSP support , probably I need MIDI HOST as the CC sent to NC are not getting correctly to expression pedal (I was able to log the MIDI messages in my computer using MIDI through and USB C cable to my macbook). I guess pluging FCB directly into NC through TRS won’t work as NC is not MIDI host device (I guess the CLOCK might be also an issue for NC to process the midi command sent by FCB1010)/

Now I’m considering to get Chocolate plus (cheaper) or CME H2Midi Pro just to be able to have MIDI host and possibly also control both preset change and expression pedal. But I’ve read expression pedals cannot work in NC or QC through MIDI usb.

Could somebody confirm this information?

THanks

I think it should work. buy the cme H2 midi pro and try it… it’s easy to set up. I use a luminite fx m1 and a M-Audio Expression but i use the Exp IN at the Nano.

I don´t think I´m uderstanding the issue. The TRS MIDI has nothing to do with HOST capability of the USB port. TRS MIDI is just standard MIDI. If you send the CC1 messages from the DIN5 standard MIDI port of the FCB1010 to the TRS of the NC, it should work just fine. If it doesn´t, there´s something wrong (programming, or DIN5-to-TRS adapter being not the correct type).

The USB HOST thing is ONLY related to USB MIDI, and is needed if you have a USB controller and want to send messages from its USB port to the USB-C port in the NC. Then, you either need the controller to have HOST funcionality (such as the Chocolate Pro), or in the case it isn´t HOST, you must use an intermediate HOST adapter in order to make the messages work in the NC.

If you check the video I posted, I connected TRS to MIDI into NC TRS/MIDI input using type A cable. It does work fine for PC commands and single CC commands, but for expression PEDAL does not (it sends the CC messages in wrong order and missing values).

I was able to make the FCB 1010 expression pedal to work using my macbook as MIDI passthrough device through Logic: FCB1010 plugged into macbook through midi usb c, Logic channel configured to passthrough, and usb c to NC usb c . Definitely it requires a host and passthrough.

There shouldn´t be problems with normal MIDI connections. I use a Luminite Graviton, and the expression pedal (connected to the Graviton) messages arrive perfectly the NC through the TRS port. I mean, standard MIDI (not USB MIDI) is working perfectly between the Graviton and the NC.

Now, if you use the USB MIDI port of the NC, of course you need a host (be it a computer, a smartphone, or a dedicated host box/controller).

I don´t know the reason why your expression messages don´t work properly through the standard MIDI route, but it shouldn´t be NC´s fault (since mine works).
