Factory preset 24F is called ‘Patch Send1 to Ret1’. There is a Tom Quayle video where he uses this patch and it sounds lovely. As far as I can tell you are supposed to use a patch-cable to jump between Send1 and Ret1. Here’s the link; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhvbQ4oPXck&t=1908s
(fast forward to 29:33)
However when I do this it sounds absolutely awful, like some kind of screaming alien noise, and not at all like the sound Tom gets in the video.
I am using the unmodified factory preset, and I have connected a patch lead, as the name suggest, from Send 1 to Ret 1.
Has anyone managed to get this to work as in the video?
Hi, thanks for your help with this - I’m really puzzled by why I can’t get this to work.
I’ve tried a couple of different patch cables but I’ll try another one tomorrow. Did you connect a cable from Send 1 direct to Return 1, as the name suggests?
And no, I haven’t touched the levels in the send/return blocks. Should I?
I’m actually using the factory preset exactly as is, directly from the ‘Factory Presets’ folder on the QC, without changing any parameter at all on any block / model on the grid.
One other thing, if I try to turn down the level of either the delay or the pitch shift within this preset, with a patch cable connected, I get an enormously loud screeching sound, the only way to control this is to turn the block off, or to turn the QC master volume all the way to zero. It’s very strange, I’ll try to post a video here, if I can find a way to take a video that is a small enough file I can post here
On the off-chance that somehow the factory preset is corrupted or a parameter has been changed I can try to download this preset again. Is it possible to download a factory preset using the QC app do you know?
I don’t think you can redownload a Factory preset, but I could try tweaking it a little and uploading it thru my account, that would probably work. They aren’t locked like user-made presets, as far as I understand.
(edit; I did that, here it is: Neural DSP Technologies - Algorithmically Perfect)
I tried the stock preset with a regular TS cable, a TRS cable, and with a pedal wired into the send/return but deactivated. In all 3 cases, the preset worked and sounded exactly like the video.
Have you ever rigged up a pedal thru your send/return fx loop? If not, maybe there’s a problem with the loop inputs. Sure is a weird situation
Thank you, that’s really helpful of you, I really appreciate your help here
I’ve marked the preset for download and will try it tomorrow (nearly midnight here in London!) and report back.
Thinking about it, I’ve only tried it with a TS patch cable but I will do what you’ve done and try a TRS cable (they are stereo S/R loops, is that correct?) and will also try a deactivated pedal as well. Have I rigged up a pedal thru the send/return fx loop? That’s a good question, and the answer is I’m not sure - so yes, if not, I suppose there could be a problem with the loop inputs. I’ll try this tomorrow too and report back, thanks again!
The loops aren’t stereo- a TRS cable will only balance the signal, not carry two sides of it. Both types did work for me though, so I don’t think the cable type is a big factor here. (with the expression pedals though, it HAS TO BE TRS)
Morning! Rainy day here so I’ve been playing with this preset to see if I can get it to work. I’ve actually made a video showing what the problem is and what it sounds like (awful!) but I can’t actually see a way to post a video, is that possible?
If not, to summarise, I’ve used the preset you sent me and I get exactly the same results as with the factory preset, which is to say an awful sound mess of notes with a screeching noise in the background. Worse still, if I try to turn down the Mix level of the first Delay block, the sound is almost unbearable.
If there’s any way of sending a video I will do that…
Ok, I’ve spent some more time trying to get this to work and I may have had some success
I recall you mentioning the levels in the Send/Ret blocks. The factory preset/your preset has the levels set as follows (screenshots from Cortex Control)…
When I play using these settings the noise is as I’ve described - awful!
Have you changed any of your Send/Ret IO settings? As when I reduce EITHER of the Send 1 or Ret 1 Level to around -5.0 dB, then the sound actually is much closer to the sound in the video.
Alternatively, if I reduce the FX Loop Return 1 level on the Grid within the preset back to 0.0 dB (remember the factory preset is at 6.8 dB) then the sound is again much more like in the Tom Quayle video.
It does seem strange though if I have to do either of these to fix the issues I’m having with this because if it is the setting within the preset then you’d think he’d mention that in his video, and if it is the IO settings that need reducing below 0.0 dB then aren’t these global settings, so it seems odd to have to change them for one preset?
