Hi there! So, I just received my CIOKS Crux through the mail, and I plugged it into the 24V thru of the second Strymon Ojai in my power chain and… it power cycles before rebooting. Doesn’t get to the load screen. I’ve switched it to 12v, before any asks, but I wonder why it struggles to boot successfully. I’m loathe to keep trying in case I damage my QC. Any ideas? Am I asking too much of my power supplies?
I have the following:
Ojai #1: Eventide H90 (2 outputs, via current doubler - 800mA / 9V) into:
Ojai #2: Empress Zoia, Chase Bliss Thermae, Hologram Microcosm, then, 24v thru to Crux.
Strymon PS-124, which feeds the Ojai, is rated at 24W max (24V, 1A).
Let’s stack up the power requirements for those digital pedals…
Eventide H90 → 9V, 800 mA → 7.2W (yowza!)
Empress Zoia → 9V, 300 mA → 2.7W
Chase Thermae → 9V, 180 mA → 1.62W
Microcosm → 9V, 400 mA → 3.6W
That’s a whopping 15.12W being taken up by your pedals. Subtracting from the PS-124’s 24W rating, you’ve got about 9W left to “safely” use.
QC is “originally” rated at 12V, 3A → that’s 36W.
Many QC users report having stable operation at 12V, 2A → that’s 24W.
There’s no way you can power everything off of the one supply. You’re going to need a separate one for your QC.
EDIT
If you add a second PS-124 to your setup and power your Ojai units individually (instead of daisy-chaining power), you could do this:
Ojai 1: H90 (two outputs used for current doubling), Zoia, Microcosm
Ojai 2: Thermae, Quad Cortex w/ Crux
Personally ran an Ojai with a Crux to power the QC, a Microcosm, a tuner and a Morningstar MC3. Powered up and was seemingly steady for a good while. But there were moments during gigs when the QC went into power cycling. Suggesting that there are instances of preset combinations when the totality of power draw is greater than the PS-124’s capacity.
Switched to a Cioks DC7. Hefty spend, but possibly the best bit of money I’ve spent this year.
