@ 9:02:
cool to see! hopefully it´s out soon.
Might be cool to see if they add compatibility with cortex cloud so you can drag and drop capture and presets to the editor and try stuff out
Thanks for sharing Xush. I liked how the drag and drop of files looked among other things. I think this coming year is going to be a good one!
Thanks for posting this @xush. Best video and most info on the editor I have seen so far.
Notable points from the video:
- The bidirectional speed on the editor looks excellent in the beta. Editor latency appears almost non-existent. Changes are reflected fairly instantaneously on both the QC and the editor regardless of which one you make the change from. A big deal if, for example by comparison, you have used the Boss Tone Studio editor on the Boss GT-1000, which takes forever to communicate back and forth.
- Neural’s stated goal of having the editor not just encompass the functionality on the QC but also add value with additional functionality. For example, the ability to enter in the metadata for a capture that is currently being executed on the QC. This means that your QC has one screen going while the editor is providing another additional and different screen. This two different simultaneous screeens (QC & editor) capability is just awesome when implemented judiciously such as during the capture process! Another place you see value add in the editor right now is a keyboard shortcut that shows additional MIDI info making MIDI easier to program. Hope this makes it onto the device as well in this case but in the interim it is grand to have it in the editor. This bodes well and I hope they find other ways to add functionality with the editor, above and beyond what exists on the device.
- Enhancement to the A/B comparison process in the capture process
- The process for setting up setlists has gotten better via features like multiple row drag and drop. Although this may improve setlist management marginally I have to say that it is still a far cry from a proper setlist implementation that uses symlinks/pointers to presets. You still have to physically shuffle your presets. Never a good plan!
- Emphasis on providing keyboard shortcuts where possible. Might as well leverage the keyboard on a computer based editor.
Can’t wait for the editor to be delivered and I really like the implementation so far from what I can see in the beta video.
An IOS app would be the best possible & most usable editor for me. A Mac/PC editor is fine but I don’t drag laptops with me when I play gigs, but I do use an iPad so IOS all the way.
Since you have to connect the QC through USB, would you really get your tablet on stage (or wherever you would use the editor) and connect it by a cable to your QC? Seems pretty impractical.
I do it all the time. Easy peasy and quite practical. I have a long lightning cable from the iPad plugged into a power strip, and into a “Camera Adapter” which goes into the iPad. There’s a USB port on that adapter which can go to right to the USB port on the QC. I do that now to use an IOS editor for the FM9. It works fine, though the IOS app (made by another Fractal user) is a bit slow in transmission speed but I can edit presets standing up if I need to.
Alternatively, you could also use wireless MIDI over bluetooth, but that’s another topic.
Will the desktop editor allow the computer’s Internet connection (wired and fast) for stuff like os updates? Or will it still rely on the QC’s crappy WIFI connection and lack of a wired solution?
I wouldn’t count on it in the first iteration, but hopefully in some later version.
At the Guitar Summit in Germany the guys at the Neural DSP booth announced the release of the beta version of the Quad Cortex desktop app for October, 9th.
We’ll see if this is actually the case.
Ethernet via USB is available in the beta, so, yes!
So, is NDSP keeping its word with open beta today?
Yes. Yes they are.
