When auditioning “amp only” captures, what occupies additional signal chain fx slots?

Okay, still a Nano Newbie. Last night I started auditioning “amp only” captures and things sounded, unlike what I expected to hear. Not that I really knew what to expect. So I’m asking the experts here for the answer. When I audition an “amp only” capture, what occupies the other pre/post signal chain fx slots? Are the fx slots completely cleared of any fx…or do the fx of the last “Preset” I listened to remain in those fx slots? For example, let’s say I’m listening to a “Plexi+V30Cab” preset and then I decide to audition an “amp only” capture, does that V30Cab still remain in the signal chain, or is it removed? The reason being, a cab is needed to better audition any amp heads. Or perhaps this is what happens, the V30Cab is removed and replaced with a “generic” cab for auditioning purposes. Thanks for any insight into this topic.

If I understand your question, you have a working preset, and are trying to audition different amp captures within that preset. In that case, only the block you are auditioning is swapped out. The other blocks in the preset are not affected. If they are active, they remain active. If they are bypassed, they remain bypassed.

With that in mind, you will want to ensure you have an active cab IR block or cab sim block after the amp you’re previewing if it is an amp-only capture. Likewise, if you are previewing combined amp+cab captures, you should disable the cab sim/IR blocks if they are active.

One related scenario… If you are starting with a blank preset and dropping in amp-only captures to audition, you will need to add a cab IR or cab sim block to the empty preset.

Hi Carl, thanks for your detailed response, you answered everything I needed to know. When I was auditioning different captures, and particularly “amp only” captures, sometimes they sounded like they had a Cab IR and at other times, I could tell they didn’t. I’m glad you cleared that up. I love the tones one can get from the Nano, but when using Cortex Cloud, the software is quite non-intuitive and convoluted. After reading your reply, sounds like the best resolution for auditioning captures like those which will “require an IR, or removing an IR” it would be a good idea to create a couple of specific “audition presets” so you’re hearing the capture as it was meant to be heard.

Exactly, I have a testing/audition preset where I can quickly add amp captures in the context of my normal signal chain. My cab IR block is on a foot switch in that preset to make it easier to switch on & off.

Hey, great idea about putting the cab IR block on a footswitch. I think I’ll do that as well, it would greatly speed things up.
