I recently bought a Quad Cortex and am hopefully getting a handle on it. Yesterday I captured one of my guitar amps and setup a preset and scenes. The reason why I bought this is because I plan on using it for road gigs. I don’t think that back line companies are all that hip on FRFR and odds are I’ll get either a Twin or a Deluxe Reverb. I know that when I use a preset with the amp Neural modeled amps, I need to not use a cab model in the cortex. But when I modeled my amp I mic’d the speaker of the amp, will this create a problem with using my amp capture?
It will sound different but not a problem as such in terms of levels etc. My experience is that using a capture with a cab embedded will sound too muffled when this is monitored thru a real cab. However, I find that some bright captures actually sound better but this is the minority. It will definitely change the sound of your capture tho and probably not what you want (but better or worse is subjective).
One important pt if you go this way is to buy an amp with an effects loop so that you take the quad cortex signal into the power section of the real amp. If not then I am pretty sure the whole sound you get will be dominated by the real amp and makes the QC more or less redundant.
My advice would be to use one of the1000s of fantastic DI captures or presets with cab turned off and send the signal into the effects return of an amp as there is no pt capturing your own rig and then completely changing its sonic characteristics. Hope this helps.
My situation is different, this is for when I CAN’T bring an amp, on fly gigs, where I’m a slave to the backline company. If I can bring an amp, I’ll just bring the amp I captured.
If you’re wanting to put an amp capture through the front of the amp, it will sound bad. Whether it’s with or without a cab sim/IR it will sound very strange. Wouldn’t suggest putting the capture you mentioned through an actual amp at all.
You might be able to put the capture of an amp through the power section of an amp, but really depends what the amp is, sound you’re going for, etc. I’ve seen it work, but also seen it also sound very bad.
