Stereo Delay: second repeat allways louder

When using Stereo Delays, the second repeat is always louder than the first one. And it sounds a little different.

I’ve tried with all delays.

If I invert the input cables in the mixer or the output cables in the Quad Cortex I get the same results but, of course, with the sides inverted.

I’m using Quad Cortex with Near Field Monitors.

Any idea?

Faulty unit?

Oh, it doesn’t happens with mono delays.

I’ve jumped out of the bed and tried with earphones. Same thing: second repeat always louder when going stereo.

If it’s the same on headphones, I don’t think there’s a hardware fault. It probably has to do with your settings or routing.

What are your delay settings and how does your grid look?
Maybe you could share your preset so we can have a look.

Are you using a split and merge in your preset(s) when using the stereo delays?

No… everything is very straight. Just amp, cab, delay, reverb…

I’ve tried every stereo Delay and it’s always the same.

A friend of me, here in the island, has the same… issue.

I don’t think it’s the hardware, then.

I’ve checked everything I’ve thought could be doing it but I can’t find out. And it happens in every preset I do.

Does it happen to you?

Tested it with different stereo delays and it didn’t happen.

Do you still get it when you make a new preset with just amp, cab and delay and leave all blocks on their default settings?

Can’t replicate it either.
You say that the second repeat is louder than the first one. Is it also louder than the dry signal?
And what about the other repeats? Do they jump around in volume also? Or is it just the second one which behaves incorrectly?

I’ll try tomorrow and see.

Thank you.

Not louder than the dry signal.

I don’t use many repeats so they fade normally after the second.

Thank you.

really need to see those delay parameter settings

I generally only change the Mix and maybe the Width, if anything.

In a few hours I’ll try and tell.

Thank you

Done:

Just load Factory Preset 1A and activate the Simple Ping Pong Delay.

Confirmed:

Not only second repeat is louder; fourth, sixth… also louder than the previous repeats.

Ok, because repeats on an even number are louder than on an uneven one, that sounds like it is either a panning issue of some sort or a hardware related problem, with one side being weaker than the other.

  • Have you tried panning your signal to the left only? Likewise, only to the right? Also with and without delay involved?
  • Have you checked your I/O in your QC? Also try doing a factory reset (but do a backup before).
  • Try with different QC outputs, different cable(s), headphones / speakers.
  • Try recording something via USB, as there are no other physical hardware outputs involved that way.

Good ideas. Thank you.

I’ve panned, without delay, and don’t see a difference in levels.

About the factory reset… I’ve just updated to the last firmware. Isn’t it like resetting?

In the I/O settings both sides seem to reach the same level in the meters.

It is a complete reset, except for the firmware. So making a backup before is important. I always do 2. One in the cloud, one local on my PC, just to be safe.
After the factory reset, you will need to log into your WIFI, then into your account and finally download the backup. Then everything on your QC will be just as it was before.

Ok.

Same preset 1A Brit 2203.

Simple Ping Pong Delay:

If I put the Stereo Width to 0, I have the same issue (even repeats are louder).

If I turn down one channel in the mixer with the delay in mono, same issue. With the delay in stereo, same issue. Changing to the other channel has the same effect

Considering that when the Stereo Width is at 0 I have the same results… should I think it’s not a hardware issue?

Ok. Then I’ll have to reinstall last firmware?

I have this issue since day one with original firmware.

Thank you.

Ok, wait a second here. Have you tried a delay (for example digital delay) and not set it to ping pong?
And no, firmware will be the same.

Thank you.

Yes, I’ve tried. I think they work ok, but not sure. I’ll check in an hour and tell you.

Would it be significant?

I’ve recorded with usb. Same results, but I had a very loud low frequency noise that I never had before. Maybe I did something wrong but couldn’t find it out.

I never had problems recording before with Quad Cortex via USB. I’m probably doing something wrong.
