I am a big fan of Royal Blood and am curious if it is possible to simplify that setup using the Quad Cortex. The sound engineer recently drastically simplified the setup which requires rapid switching between just bass, an octaved up distorted guitar tone, or a combination of both to put it simply. However, he says he is using FOUR quad cortexes. You can see some people have replicated the setup with pedals in the link below, but it is so complicated. Is it possible to simplify that down substantially using one quad cortex? Any help would be awesome. Thanks!
Yes, definitely possible with one QC.
Make a preset with all the blocks needed for the full sound and then use scene mode to switch between:
a) bass only
b) guitar only
c) bass and guitar
Then you even have 5 more scenes left if needed, say for boosted lead tone, distorted and/or clean bass, etc.
Thank you very much for the answer! I have heard a number of people asking similar questions. Just so I am clear, in this example, the bass and guitar would be routed through the same amp when they are both on, right?
I believe Royal Blood is driving at least two separate amps so when the bass and guitar are on, two amps are bring used - one for each signal. When he kills the bass signal, only the guitar amp is being used and vice versa.
This post makes me think that the separate amp setup is not possible with the QC alone.
you’re not limited to the amount of amps you use- either physical or virtual.
You can set up one entire lane for ‘guitar tone’ and send it to its own output, and the same for bass. Those can be sent to physical amps, power amps, FOH, your own monitor system, whatever you want. You would use scenes to shift between tones built into one preset and these could mute whichever output you don’t want to send at the moment
(all that said- I think pitch-shifting a guitar down sounds more like a bass than shifting a bass up sounds like a guitar)
Thank you all very much! I am sure this topic will help a lot of people looking to do this! If anyone follows through with this setup, please post on this thread!
OK, I tried making it:
it’s got a Whammy at the front, configure it as you like.
Anything useful we could tweak into it?
(also made a doom/sludged out detuned version, couldn’t stop playing that one)
Xush, you are the man! Thank you! I think this is a great template for anyone trying this. I also love the explicit empowerment for bassists
