I’m looking to see if anyone has had any success with using the Quad Cortex via a USB hub in the last year or so. I’ve got 2 issues I’m running into and am trying to diagnose the source so looking for similar experiences here:
I’m using an LG USB C monitor as a USB dock. I’ve got 2 SSD’s, a MIDI keyboard plugged into it at all times and it’s also powering my MacBook. When I first set up my QC, I plugged it in via a short USB B to C cable and experienced the outputs randomly changing from 1+2 to 3+4 only after pressing play on a session in the DAW or the volume not working as expected (like the right speaker volume would change, but the left wouldn’t).
I fixed this by plugging the QC directly into the laptop so I’ve got the cable from the monitor PLUS the cable from the QC. Haven’t had that issue since which is great!
When trying to capture anything, I need to unplug the monitor/hub otherwise there’s pretty serious static/high frequency interference. Unplugging is..fine, but it’d be nice to be able to leave my MacBook in clamshell mode and use the monitor so I don’t have to pull the MacBook out of it’s shelf just to make a capture.
So I guess the questions are:
Am I running into these issues because I’m asking too much of the monitor as a hub?
If I were to get a dedicated, high quality USB C dock that provides enough power (and hopefully isolation) would I not have these issues?
If “yes” to questions 1 and 2, what USB C dock would you recommend that has at least 3 USB C inputs in addition to the USB C to C connection to a laptop?
The prevailing wisdom with QC DAW use is to have the USB cable plugged directly into the computer.
USB docks and hubs mess things up because of the increased amount of data that has to travel back and forth between the hub and the computer. I would not expect that a different or a separate hub would fix that.
I have been using this one for about 4 years now and have never had an issue w/ the QC or Cortex Control on my Mac. All the ports are in use for drives, keyboard controllers, etc.
Unfortunately it’s not available anymore, but maybe the specs can be of some help?
I’ve got a Nano and have tried a lot of USB ideas. Eventually I arrived at a solution that works for me, namely two hubs: one for audio and one for Midi. The big deal is that the Midi network is immune to noise, so that I only have to optimize the audio network, which is standard run of the mill on pedalboards.
Thanks for the replies everyone! Between this and asking around off-forum it seems like there’s a surprising amount of good experiences with the Caldigit dock.
For those here using a dock successfully – any issues with interference/noise specifically when capturing or using an amp via 4 cable method or anything?
