Neural captures for Ampeg Bass

Just got a QC mostly for Ampeg bass neural captures.
I have two first questions:

  1. I’m recording directly into my daw. If I’m using the “Rodent+SV”, or the “Amped SV Classic” captures, those are just heads and I need to add a bass cab IR after, correct? Because that’s what it sounds like.

  2. Once you’ve got your chain going and you click on the amp capture, I’m guessing “gain” is not intended to be simulating cranking an Ampeg input but more like making sure stuff doesn’t clip? I would pick “Amped SV Classic 6” for the cleaner verse and use “Rodent+SV” for the driving, distorted chorus.

Am understanding things properly?

  1. Almost certainly those are captures without a cab baked in. Tons of IR options to use in a DAW setting to pair with the captures.

  2. “Gain” inside of a capture block feels to me more like an additional distortion parameter. Personally I try not to touch it because, if I’m working with a capture, I just want the color of the thing captured. Feel free to experiment with it by pulling the gain up or down, tweaking your instrument’s volume knob, etc.

In both cases, let your ears be the guide.
