I am trying to send MIDI clock to my QCs for live shows. I am, however, unable to see the preference to enable it. I can only see “MIDI Clock Out”. Is this possibly something I need to resolve within the Ableton session? As in, will the QC only show “Clock In” under a certain session preference/configuration?
You need to ensure the QC is listening on the right interface (USB/DIN) and on the right channel. You need to turn MIDI Through off. You may need to turn MIDI Clock Out off, but I am unsure of this.
The QC will
- Receive MIDI Clock and sync its internal tempo to the incoming clock
- Send its internal tempo out to MIDI devices downstream its MIDI Out port
- Receive incoming MIDI and pass it directly to the MIDI Out without the QC being controlled by it.
You have to pick 1 of those 3 options.
Doesn’t require any particular session or preference/configuration. Go to Settings. Select ‘Device’ from the dropdown menu on the top left. Select ‘MIDI’. Turn ‘MIDI Clock In’ on.
Something funky with your screenshot. The latest CoreOS version. 3.2.1 says “MIDI” where you are showing “MIDI Settings”. At least on the device. Although the CoCo editor does say ‘MIDI Settings’. Looks like maybe you have an old version of the firmware or perhaps you need to reapply it. What version of CoreOS are you on?
Also, turn off ‘MIDI Clock Out’. That causes the ‘MIDI Clock In’ option to grey out and become unavailable in the latest version of CoreOS. Maybe in your version it hides it entirely. Either that or maybe ‘MIDI Clock In’ did not exist in an older version of the firmware.
I’ll have to check what version of the OS is installed tomorrow. If the missing setting is a matter of firmware needing an update, I don’t think I will do it anytime soon. I don’t want to risk potential bugs/etc at this point.
Sure, there’s always some element of risk to doing an update, but I believe it is outweighed by gaining new features and functionality as well as bugfixes.
I updated the OS on my two backup units today. That was, indeed, the issue. I set the backup unit to receive MIDI clock, and I am going to A/B them throughout the next few shows (the rig is fully redundant, and I can monitor each of them independently from the actual output feed). If there are no issues, I’ll go ahead and update the main unit for each player’s rig. Thanks for the input here.
