Is it possible to control Nano Cortex with bluetooth MIDI?

I would love to control Nano with M-Wave Chocolate with Bluetooth MIDI.
Is it possible to do that now? If I could give up the cable to NC MIDI input I could use it for Expression then.

I have seen ToneX One+ that came out and they can do it. I was jealous

The Neural DSP Nano Cortex features built-in Bluetooth strictly for pairing with the Cortex Cloud app on mobile devices. It does not support Bluetooth MIDI for external controllers; MIDI control must be achieved via USB-C or the physical TRS MIDI input, which supports PC and CC messages for switching presets and controlling effects.

Somehow XSonic made it with the Airstep Cortex - but the app then connects to the switch instead of the NC. It is great though

That is exactly what I think. So it seems possible that way.
So, let’s say I have a Morningstar MIDI controller.
I do not know if this true but, if multiple connections is not possible for NC ( or not reliable ), I would want an option to choose MIDI controller. Morningstar has a very nice screen. And if it is possible to reliably connect thru BT with app and MIDI controller, then even a cheap controller like M-Wave chocolate would work.

It is 100% possible to use midi over Bluetooth with the nano although it doesn’t appear to be officially supported. The issue is with device discovery as generally the nano will remain hidden except via cortex control. I’m working on a desktop based controller at the moment and have had no issues controlling by a web app.

So why do you think we are not allowed to use BT MIDI?
It would make everything easier.
A cheap midi controller like M-Wave Chocolate would work and we could use Nano’s EXP pedal input for Expression pedals.
It is possible to use M–Wave Chocolate with EXP pedal but you need to power it and still use other cables etc etc..
There must be a good reason and I am curious.

It’s not that we’re not allowed I just think Neural lock down their hardware to ensure reliability. I have an M Vave Chocolate but haven’t put any time into seeing if I can get it to connect to the nano but I am able to connect using my Mac over Bluetooth and control all MIDI functions. When I get a chance I’ll look into the using the Chocolate.

How do you connect? It´s straightforward or is any coding needed?

You can connect the midi chocolate to the nano via the expression input and using that as a midi in port instead of Expression Pedal.

Yes and that is what I’m doing now. However, this loses the option to use an expression pedal.
The alternative would be powering chocolate with USB-C and using chocolate to NC thru another USB cable etc.. which is not ideal.

NDSP need to fix their bluetooth random disconnect problems first before they should ever attempt it. They should call IK Multimedia for advice.

Ah sorry yeah missed that. The problem what midi controllers like the chocolate is that they don’t pull the state over for FX, so you might need to click twice to effects on/off. The sonic Airstep cortex can which is really cool.

I am not familair with the Choc or Nano, what is the pedal jack for? Can an exp be plugged in there? There are midi devices which can take an exp pedal, which can then be the exp for the Cortex using midi. Thats what i am doing in the quaf cortex, i dont have any exp plugged directly into the QC, but use a midi controller that sends exp midi commands.

I’m happy using MIDI over USB. When I need to go wireless, I use the CME WIDI Uhost. It’s a killer piece of gear and very reliable:

This way I use the EXP port for my expression pedal.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. We could also use MIDI controllers from Morningstar.
They also have EXP inputs. However, if MIDI over BT worked on NC, you could just use a very cheap wireless MIDI controller like M-Wave Chocolate and it is quite popular.

The new ToneX Plus has a wireless MIDI control option and it is the most popular competition of NC. So marketing wise it would be very wise to add that feature if it is possible to do.

mvave usb controlle这个是他们应对无法蓝牙midi控制问题提供的解决方案,配套chocolat可以达到你的需求 ,在我们这里这个小东西配踏板大概200元很便宜实惠

@FitoGuitar can you explain how the WIDI Uhost works with the EXP port for the expression pedal?

I use the CME WIDI Uhost with the Neural DSP Nano Cortex to add wireless Bluetooth MIDI connectivity to the Nano Cortex.

The setup is very simple:

  • The WIDI Uhost is connected to the Nano Cortex USB port.

  • The Nano Cortex acts as a USB MIDI host/device, and the WIDI handles the Bluetooth MIDI communication.

  • Then I pair the WIDI with another Bluetooth MIDI device, such as a MIDI controller, another WIDI unit, or a computer/tablet running a DAW.

  • Once paired, MIDI messages are transmitted wirelessly with very low latency.

One of the main advantages of this setup is that it frees up the EXP port, so I can still use an expression pedal while having wireless MIDI control at the same time.

In my experience, the connection is extremely stable and reliable for live performances.

Thank you, so you mean that you can set specific midi commands to act as switches to set on/off specific modules on your NC?

Yes, exactly. You can assign specific MIDI messages to control different functions on the Nano Cortex, such as turning effects blocks on/off, changing presets, switching scenes, or controlling parameters.
