How to loop with quantize

I recently discovered the quantize feature within the looper. But I don’t understand how to use it. If I set the BPM to the desired tempo and set quantize at say 4 beats, I now have a 4/4 in X BPM. Great. But I can’t see or hear it when recording my first loop. Or am I missing something?

Any tips on this matter?

Am I the only one who uses the looper?

No one can be bothered to bend down to swipe it open.
But on a serious note, i haven’t experimented with the quantize function. I’ll try to dig a little deeper. I likes a challenge. See ya in a month

I didn’t even know there was a quantize feature. I will give it a bash and let you know. Sounds like if you set the bpm you would need an audible metronome to be able to keep in rough time for it even to be of any use.

are you using it with an external midi device?
Because on first glance (just now getting to experiment) when you turn on ‘Quantize’ it also enables the corresponding “MIDI CLOCK START” setting next to it, which to me indicates it may be intended to synchronize and quantize with an external signal or tempo. I’ll keep digging though.

silly me; it’s all right in the manual. I should’ve looked there first. I just haven’t really done a deep-dive on the sampler, I only use it for tweaking tones:

quant

Right. But because the QC has no metronome and doesn’t provide any sound for this, I don’t see how to use it on it’s own.

Yeah, other than going by the flashing tempo LED it makes for a pretty tricky “silent count-in”
More useful if triggered by external midi device I’d think

I used it for a show where I was playing to a click. I had the QC recieving clock from an external source, then set the start/end to be quantised to a bar I think.

Worked great, but only really used it for a couple of rehearsals and a show, then haven’t needed to do that again.

I think it’s more for if you have a MIDI clock from an external source to quantize to

I use it when I loop along with my BeatBuddy. The clock is controlled by the BB. It keeps the loop in time so it doesn’t drift over time. Works well for me.
I think stand alone it would help keep the loops in time?

Hi Jaynvck,

I am trying to use the Beat Buddy (master - midi out) to the QC (slave - midi in) via a DIN midi cable. I cannot for the life of me get the looper X to stay in sync - panful results. I do not have any issues with the BB and Helix or AXE. It seems just with the QC.

When you get a chance can you tell me your QC setup for the general midi settings and the Looper X setup parameters of midi start, quantize number, etc.

If anyone else can share some pointers it would be greatly appreciated.

So I’ll have to take a look after work today see if there is specific settings, I know I had to run the bb clock into the QC. the bb had to control the tempo, it takes the qc tempo out, turns the tempo led blue.
The looper should stay in tempo, I know I have to use the quantize on the looper, 3rd screen, I usually set it to 4 beats when the bb is using a simple 4/4. Otherwise it’s challenging to get the beat right. It seems to work well, sometimes after a while I can hear the beat slide out of my loop. But a quick looper pause and then play at the beat start puts them back in sync for a bit.

Where exactly are you having trouble? Are you not syncing up all together?

I would have to say not syncing up at all.

The light blinks blue and the delays on the QC will change as I change the speed on the BB. That part does seem to sync good.

The looper, however, is dependent on the accuracy of my 1st punch in. The looper doesn’t start automatically when the BB (master) starts. Therefore it will drift pending the closeness to the 1st beat I start the looper. This leads me to think it is not sync’d. It doesn’t matter what number I use in the quantize. That only seems to control what beat from the start the recording begins.

I must have something configured incorrectly somewhere, especially sense you are able to get positive results.

Setup:
QC is setup to be the slave -
under Settings > midi settings:
Midi channel - 2
Midi thru - off
Midi over USB - off
Ignore Duplicate PC - off
Midi clock out off

            The looper setting:
looper params 1 - Threshold is grayed out
looper params 3 - quantize 1-4 (doesn't seem to make any diff
                                                                   in the syncing)
            Midi Clock Start is 0n.

BB is the master.
Output Type - Midi-out
Channel 2
Sync - Always on
Start - Main Beat
End - End only
Notes - Enable or Disable (doesn’t make a diff in syncing)
