Good morning all,
I recorded through an Apollo twin and was curious if any of you use any type of compression or EQ before going into the plug-ins.
I was thinking about maybe cutting out a little bit of mud and doing some light compression with the Apollo twin and then sending that into one of the amp plugins and then sculpting from there.
Also, if any of you have any pointers on trying to dial in an ideal amp tone that doesn’t need lots of fixing later, I would like to learn how you guys do it.
Some of my favorite stuff that I’ve heard, they had the main toe dialed in and left it mostly the same.
There are no rules. Do what sounds good to you for your recording process. Trust your ears!
Compressing your raw guitar track a little bit before sending it into an amp plug-in should be fine. Depending on the plug-in, it may have a compressor “pedal” which you can use before the amp model anyway.
“Ideal” amp tone does not exist. The best thing I can point you toward is to really experiment with cab sounds in the plug-in–shooting out different mics, mic placement, cabs–and/or compare that with external IRs. If you’re patient enough, you should be able to find a happy medium that works for most of your mixing needs.
I have been trying to figure some stuff out. I really like the brighter guitar tones for punk rock/metal but find that most keep it kind of dark. I play a Fender Tele Thinline JA-90s.
I’ve wanted to sit down with someone with more experience and dial in some presets that work for me but haven’t been able to yet.
I’m all for pointers
