Curious on your experiences : ToneJunkie's SLO Crunch vs. others

I’m curious if anybody tried ToneJunkie’s “SLO 100 Crunch” capture yet. I tried and compared it with several captures and built-in amps, but nothing beats it so far. Actually the difference for me is by far. This very capture sounds so realistic, has feeling, with dynamics etc. on stage. Even with different gain settings. Therefore I’m using 3 scenes of it. Low, mid and hi gain.

I know it differs player to player, and the best is what you tried and liked. I’m happy with what I have. I’m just curious on what makes this capture great for me. As far as I know the best scenario of using a capture is to use it as it is, not changing the gain or eq settings. Because it doesn’t behave like the real amp, it’s just a capture of a specific setting.

This is maybe my ignorance, maybe I will find out similar nice ones too. Please just let me know your experiences. And if you didn’t tried it yet, go ahead  I think I have the chance to thank ToneJunkie for this one :ok_hand:

P.S. I also bought the SLO-100 X plugin and can’t wait for the compatibility for QC. Really wonder how it’s gonna be comparing with this capture (can’t check on computer currently). So here is a serious Soldano lover

Rabea has a few excellent SLO captures. Have a look at those, too.

Ah thanks for pointing out. I think I missed them, will try asap.

I agree. I love the SLO Plug from DSP and cant wait to get them on QC.
The captures of them that exists arent so good as the Plug. So I captured some of my favs from the Plugin (without modulations or something se) and it comes very close.

Be a babe and stick them on the cloud pleeeeeease? :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I’ll do it later and do here a notice

Hey Spinal, look at my first two public Captures, they are now online “SoldPlugMetal1” and “SoldPlugMetal2”

Legend! Thank you so much! I’ll give them a whirl tomorrow when I can crank the amp a bit!

Oh, just thought, do these have a cab included or are they direct? I play through a marshall 2x12, so I can’t really use captures that have the cab sim bundled in…

According to their icons they are full captures including the cabs

Right, I had used the simulated speaker in the plugs

Yeah fair enough. Far be it from me to give you homework, but if you were to re-make those captures without the cab block, it would give you much more flexibility going forward to swap out the cab as you see fit - which arguably is one of the most important aspects of TOAN.

It also opens up the possibility of running the QC into a real guitar cab,

It would help you. It would be beneficial for you. It would be more flexible for you. Maybe it might be something others might like, but it would mostly be bestest for you.

Going back to topic, I recently tried the Plini X plugin either. I was actually really excited about it, as the demos were awesome. I wrote my new presets with it, tried at the soundcheck and all was fine. But on the stage it wasn’t quite right. So I got back to basics, to my old SLO capture that I mention initially here.

My I only have one chance left, waiting for the SLO-100 X Pcom  Maybe I loved the Slo tone and nothing compares to it, we will see. The only thing bothers me with this capture I’m using is it’s a head+cab capture and I can’t seperate them (just in case). Otherwise the tone of it is great for me.

Maybe it would goes to eleven! Great Idea.
IRs make a huge difference. I will do the homework tomorrow. At the moment I’m experimenting a lot with captures and constellations anyway. I usually use a Marshall 1960A with an SM57 microphone as IR. I bought an IR pack and don’t regret it. The sustain, listen to it.

I will report again.

as versatile as a DI capture can be (makes sense to have available for stage rigs) sometimes a full-capture grabs that magical combination of interaction in your entire signal chain that just can’t be duplicated otherwise. I can see the practicality of making both versions to have on hand but it can lead to some tough choices

I love the Youtube videos representing SLO and Plini tones, also love them while playing with standalone. But somehow it doesn’t work for me on stage, missing something.

No matter how many times I try I eventually go back to TJ’s Slo Crunch capture. The reason I keep searching is, that capture is a bit dark (blanket in front of speaker issue). Need more clarity. Eventually can’t find it’s amp response with other plugins or modelers. Another issue is that capture is amp+cap included, so doesn’t let me try IR’s. Starting to feel like this will take ages for me

I will start again searching good captures of well-known users.

I also used the TJ SLO captures for a while, but needed a DI capture (when in rented rehearsal spaces, I plug the QC into an amp’s FX return), so I was looking for a good substitute, of their SLO Lead capture in particular.
What I ended up with that was pretty much spot on is a DI capture (namely the JoeBent capture SLO “huge” here Neural DSP Technologies - Algorithmically Perfect ) into a Celestion official IR of a G12M Greenback closed back 4x12 cab from this pack https://www.celestionplus.com/product/g12m-greenback-4x12-closed/ ) and a touch of post EQ.

Since then I’m moved to the SLO-X plugin (still using the same IR in stereo with the 1960TV IR that Leon Todd gave away), as to me it has a better touch response, but tone-wise, it is very close.

Thank you so much for the feedback, I will definetely check these out!

I really wish to use SLO X on stage, as the idea of having same presets both on stage and desktop makes sense to me. Even though plugin sounds awesome on standalone, I don’t know why but on stage I missed something. Maybe it’s because I use in ear headphones instead of floor monitors.

Did you feel any un-realistic response with the plugin on stage? Maybe the IR is the answer? Sparkle of plugin is way nicer, but somehow that capture is more fluent and amp response is still more realistic to me.

I haven’t used the plugin onstage yet, as my current project’s in the rehearsal stage…soon ! Though I’m really happy with the tones I’m getting right now and the way the setup is feeling in rehearsal, both through an amp (last rehearsal was a DSL100 halfstack -used as a poweramp of course-, sounded very good) and in IEMs/headphones/monitors at home.

Tbh I’m not too keen on the cab included in the plugin and the QC version, sounds harsh and raspy to me, but then again I’ve never been a fan of the Vintage 30, so there’s that. And to my ear the TJ capture are definitely based on a GB 4x12, there’s a distinctive lack of the signature V30 high mids honk and harshness in it, which is probably why I liked it in the first place. And to me, the IRs I settled on definitely were a big part of the equation to get something that’s bright and lively while not being brittle nor fizzy.

And yeah, I’m also still debating IEMs only vs monitor wedges/FRFR vs poweramp and cab to get a response and feel I’m happy with. Nothing beats moving air, but the FoH is better with IEMs only, and the QC is responsive enough as is that it might be a possibility, so…we’ll see.

Again nice feedbacks and info, thank you. These will be a nice starting point for me. And good luck with your ongoing project, hope you have a wonderful time on stage.
