Capturing amps with Behringer Ultra GI-100 DI Box

Hi all, I’m looking to capture a Peavey Invective 120 amp with a Behringer Ultra GI-100 DI Box and wanted to check I have this setup correct before I blow anything up.

Am I correct that -

  • The amp’s direct out goes into the Ultra GI DI in.
  • I have a matched cab connected to the Ultra GI’s direct link to cabinet to take the load.
  • I connect an XLR to 1/4 conversion cable from the Ultra GI’s XLR socket to the QC’s capture socket.

And for this does the Ultra GI need to be powered by battery?

Thanks in advance!

Did you ever find out if this worked. I’m looking for a cheap load box and wasnt shire if the GI100 would work.

The GI100 is not a load box. It’s just a DI box.
The GI100 can be plugged in between the amp and speaker cab, but you still need a load for the head. Whether that’s plugging in a cabinet or load box from there is up to you.

During the capture of my head I would still have a cab connected.

I have an original (120w) 5150 and i want to do a direct capture. I also dont want to spend a ton of money on a load box I’ll only use once. The Behringer GI100’s are pretty cheap. Would that work? And would it “soak” enought of the 120w coming from the head. I just want to make sure i dont damage my QC by feeding it any wattage.

My plan would be head > GI100 > cab. The using the xlr out from the GI100 to the QC for capturing. From what I read the xlr out from the GI100 shouldn’t be “powered” and so therefore shouldn’t damage the QC. Is that correct?

The GI100 wouldn’t soak any power from the head. As long as you plug the GI100 between the head and cab you’ll be fine. Honestly plugging into the cabinet will be more accurate than a load box. They’re not as good a load as an actual speaker cab.

If you use the XLR output of the GI100 to the QC you’ll be fine. That’s just a signal meant for a preamp anyways. All the power of the actual head will go to the speaker cab. Just make sure the speaker simulator of the GI100 isn’t engaged, otherwise the capture will sound very strange
