Acoustic guitar using IR sounds telephoney/tinney

I purchased an iR pack from Selahsounds.com on a recommendation from pro guitarist Rod Castro. No matter what i try, i do not get a natural sounding mic-ed acoustic tone via QC. It’s all very telephoney, like extreme hi and low cut filtered. Not sure where I’m going wrong

I turned a bunch of acoustic IRs into captures- see if those sound any different to you:

They’re not any of the commercial IRs available out there, only free ones publicly shared, but it might at least help narrow down where the issue lies.

are you using a piezo pickup on an acoustic, or an electric guitar with mag pickups?

I think it’s a thinline under the saddle pickup. The guitar is a martin d something and the 1/4” goes into the endpin(strap button)

Consider that for a good and Natural ACOUSTIC guitar ir, it’s better to have more that 200ms .
QC has 21ms..It sounds, YES , but with a lot of losses
I think yours irs are 200 or 500ms, with the manufacturer raccomandations of Better results with 500ms.
Imho there Is noticeable difference when i use QC only 21ms or redwirez mixir plugin at 200 or 500 for acoustic irs.
Acoustic ir Need really bigger samples, they aren’t Guitar Cab ir…sadly

That’s why I’ve resorted to capturing so many- in case the process can make use of the longer file length. I’m not sure that it does, but the results sound good to me and definitely achieve the desired natural tone and resonance.

Plenty of users are getting good results using acoustic IRs so it should be possible to dial in a usable tone.

@Terryrocks- what else are you using in your signal chain on the QC? Would help to see what else could be influencing the tone

Well, not sure what happened, but after booting up today it all sounded fine. Guessing the QC needed a reboot after installing new IRs

Could be the capture itself? I made a patch for my piezo pickup and used a capture of a Martin D-35, then a tube Preamp capture, and an EQ and compression block, and it sounds great! For my real Martin acoustic, I run it into the same tube Preamp capture, EQ, compression, and it sounds great! Maybe you just need to play with your setup and tweak EQ as necessary? Not every capture is going to sound perfect through every setup.

No, after rebooting the QC the next day, it sounded great. I guess I just needed to reboot the qc
