Quad Cortex Mini / CorOS 4.0.0

I love the form factor on the Mini.

There’s a nice little CorOS update (4.0.0) for existing QC users, even if the QC Mini may not be your thing.

I’ll be honest, I think neural are going in the wrong direction. They released the nano with users still being unable to use it due to bugs with bluetooth and wifi problems, they still haven’t finished with things like all plugins being compatible on the quad. I think this is going to upset a lot of users

anything they do always upsets some users- they probably are well aware of that by now.

I’m torn- many of us would rather see the original device brought up to full functionality before seeing other hardware introduced… BUT:

this pretty much guarantees QC development will keep going forward since the mini is on the same architecture as the QC. So I think in the long run, this is good for everyone. If they can’t keep their revenue stream going, the QC would die- so anything that keeps cash flowing is going to help

Agree. Great news that the QC isn’t obsolescing soon…

Yep, really good news for us QC users. This shows that they’re dedicated to that platform.

And as I posted on the FB group, I see several scenarios in which the Mini version makes a lot of sense: rack-mounted in a drawer where the switches are of no use (as many touring bands seem to do these days); as a desktop recording/practice device where it’s tethered to a computer and controlled via CoCo; as a smaller travel device (this easily fits in a guitar soft case front pocket). And probably several more I can’t think of right now.

I’m not purchasing one immediately, but I like this.

I think this can only good news for us QC users. Shows they’re invested in this platform for what looks like the long haul.

I like that they keep going for compact designs instead of Line 6, whose devices are huge and a pain to carry around. The pricing is interesting — if you need all the power without the footswitching, it’s a more affordable option. But in my case, it just further solidifies the original Quad Cortex as the perfect size for many users.

However, I’m still disappointed with Core OS 4. There are still no new or more flexible ways to assign footswitches, despite many users asking for this for at least a couple of years.

Honestly, the MINI looks awesome and I may very well replace my full QC. Do you suspect it will be able to assign a one footswitch to 2+ blocks like on the QC?

EDIT: I would need something like this to use my 2nd TRS expression pedal into the MIDI IN.

There’s a pretty awesome QoL update on CorOS 4.0: Settings > Device > Gig View Footswitch Access. FINALLY !!!

And it would have been a GREAT opportunity to add Bluetooth, but no…

Totally agree - the QC Mini introduces Footswitch Pages, which a lot of us have been asking for on the QC for ages. So this would have been the perfect opportunity to add that to the QC as well, but looks like another opportunity missed…

How do you change banks on the mini?

Not holding my breath for the pivot and findings that the mini has some juice that cannot be squeezed from the big brother.

Codec related comes to mind.

Also is the i/o identical to the big qc?

Indeed, brother. I still have hope they’re gonna give us what we want. Three months ago I got a Nano as a backup for my QC, so I do believe they’ll deliver what we want.

I’m glad we’re starting to see momentum with updates. Granted they still have room in terms of addressing some big opportunities, I’m hoping we see 6 or more updates this year. I think that would keep the masses content. Of course the substance of those updates matters. PCOM has to keep coming. For me, the biggest quality of sound miss is not having a polyphonic pitch shifter. I’m in a band where the singer constantly is changing keys and I can’t possibly rekey everything. I’d say roughly half our songs are shifted and the current solution in QC sounds REALLY bad.

Exactly, it’s a very very good news for QC users.

I really hope they will copy what kemper did with their profiler, they improved this low processing power unit so much and for a very long time before make a mk2 (even not a 2 !) version !! I don’t know how many fractal version came during that time but probably a lot !!!

I really don’t think it is the time for negativity. There are so many problems right now, but Neural not doing enough, just isn’t one right now.

V2 Captures are a big step forward, the new reverbs adress a long requested feature and made some very expensive pedals obsolete. The Gig view is a small but great addition and I’m sure there will be some bigger PCOM drop.

There is room for improvement and there always will be, but after a very quiet time, everything seems to be moving forward now and the mini solidifies that. I personally don’t need one, but it is reassuring that it uses the same software.

So I think it is a time to celebrate what is there now and try it all out. The blossom reverb is sounding absolutely stunning, the plate is really great for nice vintage tones and the spring is a dream come true, for me:partying_face: The dumble amp is great, too and if I bought pedals for all that, that would be a lot of money.

I sure hope, that they will expand on the looper and midi etc, but man, they really delivered big time

I think this would be a good opportunity to reflect on that dry spell period between November 2024 (release of CorOS 3.1.0) and August 2025 (CorOS 3.2.0). During that time there were so many complaints among users of, “They forgot about us! They abandoned the Quad Cortex!

Instead, Neural were working on:

  • Dealing with that audio codec replacement issue for the QC
  • PCOM for Cory Wong X, Nolly X, and Parallax which got released in CorOS 3.2.0
  • CorOS updates and new devices (non-PCOM)
  • Nano updates and new devices
  • Maintaining Cortex Control
  • Plug-in development for Mantra, Misha Mansoor X, and John Mayer X
  • …and QC Mini + the CorOS updates leading to 4.0.0 to bring it in lockstep with the QC
  • …and who knows what else?

As a hardware engineer, I can attest that product development is a long, arduous, and nonlinear process. I don’t blame Neural for taking the extra time to deliver a lot of kickass stuff to us. They were clearly working very hard. I’m gonna play with the blossom reverb tonight and dream.

EDIT: Add V2 captures and uploading factory capture settings. Derp. Thanks @xush.
