CorOS Version: 3.2.0
Describe your issue:
When using the send outputs for mono InEar monitoring I am unable to use the doubler block anywhere before the send block, as it mixes the stereo signal down to mono which causes massive amounts of phase cancellation. Technically this problem exists with any blocks that produce stereo output, but mixing down stereo cabs or a stereo delay obviously produces less phase cancellation.
In my opinion mono send blocks should send only the left or right channel by default (which is why I’m adding this as a bug) but while you are at it, please add a balance control to the mono send blocks.
Steps to reproduce your issue:
- Add any stereo blocks before a mono send block (use doubler for maximum effect)
- Listen to the output and realize that your stereo signal is downmixed to mono, which can produce massive phase cancellations
I expected this to happen:
Mono send blocks should not downmix stereo signals by default.
If you want just the signal from one channel, why not keep it in stereo and just plug into one output? You won’t have a doubler effect if the direct and delayed signals are panned hard right and hard left. Doublers produce phase cancelation, by nature. When in stereo, you don’t perceive the cancelation because the two signals are coming from two sources (unless you have both speakers sitting close together). Keep in mind the taking the signal from just one channel will alter other stereo effects like chorus, flanging, ping-pong delay, etc.
Yes I could use the send 1/2 block to achieve this, but I have a setup where two guitarists play through the same QC and both need their own mono InEar signal. In that case I need to place the send 1 and send 2 blocks at different places before we mix the signal together for FoH.
I am aware that, using only the left channel, I’ll loose some of the stereo fx information but I can happily live with that for having a single block InEar sound split off.
I know my use case might be quite niche and there are many other ways I could solve the problem but that is beside the point. A mono send block should not mix down a stereo signal by default without an option to change it.
Yeah, that’s a pretty specific scenario.
I think you’re wanting the QC to handle something best provided by a separate mixer. That said, a Bug Report is for reporting an issue where the QC is not performing as intended. I think that this might be better addressed as a Feature Request. Who knows? Maybe this capability could be added in a future update. In the meantime, I hope you find a work-around.
