MASSIVE Buzz in Effects Loop

Hey all. Been really enjoying my QC, but I need some help identifying a problem.

I’m running a Carbon Copy Delay in the FX Loop on the QC. However, it is making a TON of noise when plugged in.

Here’s the situation.

Quad Cortex being powered by Walrus Audio Power HP. 12V to the QC.
Carbon Copy being powered by Walrus Audio Power HP. 9V.

Unit is silent if I unplug any of the cables to the Carbon Copy.

I have tried swapping out all patch cables.

I have tried using a completely separate power supply, on a different outlet, to power the Carbon Copy.

I have tried a different pedal - Kliq TinyTune - same issue remains.

This isn’t a little “hizz” - it’s like a single coil in an ungrounded amp that’s turned to 9 or 10. It’s a LOUD BUZZ.

Any thoughts, suggestions?

Cheers!
AP

Have you tried both FX loops?

Have you tried to just plug a cable from the effects send to the return?

thanks to both of you guys for the ideas - both of them didn’t solve the problem

and that is because, the Rockboard MOD 1 V2 sucks, and is not shielded at all. I went directly into QC Input 1 for the guitar and it completely eliminated the issue.

now to figure out what’s next …

How are you plugging into the amp/cab? I had noise using 1/4 and it went away when using the XLR out

If those routing boxes can’t handle a 1/4” output then I wouldn’t bother using them. I’ve researched using stuff like that, but seems like a waste considering the issues I’ve seen from them that feel fairly common

So I took the unit apart. It was really poorly grounded - before I took it apart, I could hardly get a solid ground on any part of the board.

Replaced the crimp/ground terminal on one side, which had missed some of the strands, filed down the bracket that acts as the ground point of contact, and filed down where the screw seals the other end of the bracket. Also added a lock washer.

once I did all of that, did a test without mounting the MOD, and the noise was completely gone.

Mounted it back, no issues!

Well done diagnosing and fixing the issue! :+1: I’m using one of those Rockboard Mods without any issues, but makes me a bit worried to be running AC mains through it if the grounding is that bad.

On a side note, where did you get that nice compact XLR cable from? Been looking for something like that.
