I get level reset on booting

CorOS Version: 3.0

Describe your issue:
When starting up QC my input level for input 1 is reset and so low that it doesn’t register on input meters.

This occured after updating to 3.1. First I though that I had serious noise issues since the FOH, amp and monitors sent me some insane hiss. When attempting to adjust noise gate, I saw that it didn’t even register my input. Then going to input levels, I saw that I was basically fighting with the over all dynamic range of the input, the hiss was because I had turned the mixer up to account for the low signal. For my J-bass I had to turn the input up to +35db to get a -12db input level. Played on without problems.

The next day, I had the same issue. The input level on input 1 reset and I had to adjust it again.

Input 2 does not reset, nor do any of the returns, so I could use those. But I would like the issue resolved.

Edit: I have been on 3.0 using input 2 via wireless. Problem only noticed now since it’s not a live situation and have been wired to input 1. Updated to 3.1 today and problem seems to be gone. Will post more if problem returns.

Is the Input level on the I/O page for ‘In 1 Level’ actually changing when you reboot? I am also on 3.1 and this does not occur on my device. What is your ‘In 1 Level’ set to? Have you tried a different cable and guitar?

Do you have anything sending MIDI to your QC? Don’t know how that would change your input level but worth disconnecting MIDI while testing.

You mention that you had to boost your mixer by 35db. That seems excessive. Could the low output to your “mixer” be related to having too low a setting on your master volume (large knob)? Where do you set your master volume? Which outputs do you have assigned to Settings > ‘Master Volume Knob Assignment’?

I would check my gain staging all the way through my preset. Maybe start with a simple one first, e.g. amp and cab. Bypass the noise reduction on the input block while testing.

Hi, yes the input level itself is changing. Whatever ai set it to, its at 0dB on startup.

No midi connected, and my gain structure is good and remains unaltered apart from the input gain.

The 35dB is not on my mixer, but on the input level adjustment. Master is at 100, and affects output 1,2,3&4 plus headphones.

Noise reduction are off, since they have no effect when input levels are so low.

Cables are good, so are my instruments. As stated this only happens on input 1, not 2…

I have read posts here about noise on this update and I’m wondering of this is actually what’s occurring… If one doesn’t pick up that the input levels change, then boosting output or receiver (mixer / amp etc) will drastically increase noise…

35db boost means there’s something wrong either with your chain/guitar or your QC

Wow, something definitely wrong if you have to set your input level to 35db. Barring a hardware issue with your QC, this still sounds like potentially a cable or guitar causing a problem, as has already been suggested. Another possibility is an issue with your last firmware upgrade (I might try reinstalling),

First though I would probably take another run at connecting a different cable and instrument. Unplug every other connection. Another possibility is that I didn’t have my guitar cable in the correct input jack, or that it hadn’t been pushed in all the way. Would think you would have caught that while testing an alternate cable and guitar though. Guess it doesn’t hurt to double-check.

If none of that yields a fix, and especially if the input level keeps resetting on you, you can find the Recovery process on pg.14 of the 3.0 version of the QC’s manual. Make sure to make a backup first! If reinstalling the firmware doesn’t do the trick it might be time to contact Neural for a repair or further troubleshooting.

Btw, it occurred to me that although unlikely, perhaps the QC has some kind of automatic reset to 0db if it detects that your input level is wildly high. Something that might happen if you cranked the input level up to 35db and then the level intermittently jumped up extremely high, as you would expect under normal operation with that large a boost.

Thanks, I’ll try rolling back the update to 3.0 / reinstalling the 3.1.

It’s not cables or instruments, that would not make the input level go to 0dB anyway. Perhaps it does return to 0 because it’s so high, but I haven’t read that anywhere. I’ll try and let y’all know!

I don’t think it will roll back to 3.0. The “3.0” reference in my post was to the QC manual version. Choose the ‘Factory Reset’ option in the recovery process. Make a backup first!

There must be an issue with your cables or guitar if you’re boosting the signal 35 db. Unless your QC is broken

How did you reinstall CorOS 3.1? To my knowledge downgrading and therefor reinstalling the firmware isn’t possible?

You’re right, I have been on 3.0, and now updated ti 3.1.

I have been on 3.0, not 3.1. Updated now and problem seems to be gone. Will issue more if problem re-occurs

Glad you got it sorted out! Your original post stated you had already updated to 3.1. Details were a little confusing as it sounded like you were already on 3.1. Makes the suggestion to install the latest firmware all the more relevant. Upgrading to the latest firmware is often low hanging fruit and the first step before going down the rabbit hole of trouble shooting.
