Confused over capture storage on device

I’m on Cortex Control 4.0.1 and trying to understand how the Downloads folder relates to actual device storage.

I’ve downloaded a lot of captures from Cortex Cloud; several amps and a bunch of drive pedals (30 so far) and they all show up in my Neural Captures > Downloads folder. But when I check Device Settings > Device Storage, My Captures only shows 4/2048. Yet, when I go into My Captures in the directory, there is only one single capture (no filters are applied).

So my questions are:

  1. Do captures sitting in the Downloads folder live on the device, or are they staged in Cortex Control until I save them? They don’t seem to count toward the 2048 My Captures limit.
  2. What does “Save to My Captures” actually do — is that the step that commits a downloaded capture to the device library? Is it a best practise to ALWAYS do this to ensure captures follow you no matter what?
  3. I’m able to build and save a preset using a capture straight from Downloads, without that capture ever appearing in My Captures, and the preset works. Is that capture actually stored on the device, or could it show up as “missing” later (e.g. standalone, or after an update)?

Basically I want to know the safe workflow so I don’t end up with presets pointing at captures that aren’t really on the hardware. Thanks!
