A solution for hum when profiling?

So I have been profling my amp collection and have run into an annoying hum when profiling. Regular usage of the QC seems fine just when outputting to the input jack of my amps causes ground hum. I found a video where someone hooked up a USB cable to a ground adapter and it vanished. I am not comfortable doing this so I went on the hunt for a cable solution and I found a cable that might do the trick. It would require an adapter for USB B to USB A to make it work. I wanted to run this by the community to see if I am on to something. If no one knows I may be the guinea pig.

Do you have the QC and the device you’re capturing powered from the same wall outlet? Also, have you tried changing the ground lift setting on the QC?

I have tried everything different outlets, cables, power conditioner etc… I have found that a lot of people run into this. This is my second quad cortex and they both do it. I think it is just some areas don’t play nice with the non grounded power supply.

Hmmm, very frustrating, indeed. It’s so odd that some units have hum/buzz issues (like when using headphones or USB recording) and others don’t. Although I’ve always recorded via analog inputs and I’ve only done a couple of pedal captures, I’ve never experienced any hum issues, including while using headphones with nothing else connected. Hopefully you can figure out a reasonable solution soon.

Can you describe your capture signal chain? Are you experiencing hum when capturing all of your amps or only certain ones? Can you hear the hum coming from the amp’s speaker? If not, that would indicate that it’s happening downstream from your mic. A mixer or preamp, perhaps? If the amp is humming, check cords and any pedals between the QC and the amp input.

Its all of them. If I plug my guitar straight in to the amp no noise, its only when sending the capture out to the amp input. That video I posted has the exact noise I am experiencing. I think i will try that product I posted and see if it works. Not a huge deal as I wont be capturing a ton of gear.

$33 seems a bit steep for what it is/does. Have you tried another means of grounding (even if temporary) to make sure that solves the problem? One other possible fix is to lift the ground on your amp with a grounding adaptor. Not optimal but only risky if your amp has a problem. As long as you’re using it in a controlled environment and only when making captures, you’ll be fine. If it’s a ground loop issue, lifting the amp ground on the amp might work.

Like PP asks, have you tried other means of grounding? XLR out to a different head or mixer that is grounded? USB to a computer that is grounded (3-prong plug)?

I was able to get it grounded and took away the horrible hum. I made a bunch of profiles of all the modes from My Mark V 90 with a pretty clean signal if anybody wants to try them.

I found that having the least amount of cables connected to the QC when profiling is the best solution for getting rid of noise / hum during the Capture process.

Disconnect the USB cable and anything else connected to the unit. Just plug in the following:

  1. cable going from the “Capture Out” to the input of the amp.
  2. cable going from your guitar into IN1
  3. cable coming from the mic or loadbox to IN2
  4. headphones

Doing it this way helped me get rid of the noise during the Neural Capture process and improved the quality of my Captures.

Glad you found a solution, Rick. Care to tell us about it? Thanks for sharing the fruits of your quest.
