Unit too dependent on app?

Hey guys,

Really like Neural DSP stuff but I’m not sure about one thing on the Nano Cortex - if, for example, the company gets bought/goes bankrupt/etc. and the app is discontinued/deactivated, to what degree can you really still use the Nano Cortex?

Based on its the current state, you can only edit parameters with the app, which also needs internet connection, and there is no PC editor (neither online or offline), and the current firmware only allows to access 4 presets on the unit instead of the total 64 (perhaps can be extended with MIDI, but surely could be improved?)

So.. how really safe are we as consumers to have a fully functioning hardware if the app is suddenly not working?

I understand you can still change captures or something, but not presets, and you’re also not able to edit the fx chain on the presets and the parameters on each effect… so if the app is phased out/deactivated/etc., you’re left with an extremely limited unit.. does this make sense or am I just overthinking?

Thanks
Cheers

Overthinking it. No need to guess about what if’s. The product is strong, selling very well and the company is doing well. There are feature requests to add more features and I am sure NDSP is planning some good stuff for the Nano. Stop worrying and play your guitar!

Sure the company can be doing great, but if you work in tech or anything related you certainly know how fast things can turn or companies can get bought.

In that case, just having a PC editor and phone app that do not depend on internet connection will make the product a lot more useful in the long run. I’d like to use this for 5-10 years without worrying that I’ll end up with an audio interface with 4 guitar presets for $500.

Agreed! I think we will see those dependencies for INET removed at some point, at least I would like to believe that is on NDSP’s radar.

I"m loving NC but people are reporting problems. I just use NC live when I play my acoustic 7 strings guitar to remove some quark from piezo pickup (and if NC present some problem, I can go without it). With NC internet app dependency (and not saving my presets) I don’t feel confident to play my electric guitar on gigs. I hope the developers fix this soon, so I can use it on gigs.

I definitely agree on removing the INET limitations but there are also bugs with all gear. I would say the Nano has been pretty stable issue wise and it appears there has been a very low percentage of defective units etc.

I think your concerns are valid and it’s something I thought hard about before purchasing. I’m really enjoying the nano cortex, but using my phone to change settings when tracking is awkward. Before I looked to purchase, I’d assume there was an offline desktop editor like everyone else, but not yet, I don’t see how this can’t be on neural’s roadmap.

Opening up MIDI to control parameters etc would bring in open source hardware and software controllers.

I am really hoping they release an (ideally offline) desktop app which improves both the editing/ease of use and longevity of the product in itself.
