I am trying to build a preset here where I go to outputs 1/2 with cab sim and 3/4 will get no cab sim and go to power amp and speaker. I have not created the split yet to route to 3/4, I pause here because I hear a tonal difference when I move the cab sim here. I put the original on a preset and switch between the two. I am still only monitoring outs 1 and 2 - is there a clean way to do this and maintain original sound? Please and thank you
Where is here?
How are you monitoring it?
This person made a second thread for something they already posted about.
You have to duplicate all the effects you’re adding after the amp sims on another row. So row three with have the mod, delay/verb which routes to 3/4. Row 4 will have the speaker sim followed by the same effects routing to 1/2. I think it’s the only way you can do it since you want the speaker in the middle of your chain. Also you don’t need a split/mixer on row 2.
In the studio, on monitors and headphones. I hear a difference. Am I overthinking it? The sound of the amp gets less meat and effects lose spread! Does that make sense?
Sorry if I am dense here. I hear all the effects and amp sim since I am still monitoring 1 and 2. However, There is a clear sonic difference when I simply move the cab sim. Does that make sense?
Yes, there definitely will be a sonic difference since all the effects are going through the cab sim. Either way they’ll have to go through your power amp + cabinet as well.
You can have the effects after the cab sim if you want. It just makes the routing a little more complicated, since you want the cab sim in the middle (but still also route to a power amp and cab) but still doable.
Since CoreOS 3.0.0 came out I moved all my cab sims to the end of the chain, trying to better emulate how real amps/cabs sound, where the dry effects also live before the amp and wet between the amp and cab. I think all my patches now are a tad livelier but I had to make several changes to the blocks preceding my IR(s). I’m happier with the result then before so I think I’m going to keep on building prestes like this (for now).
What exact difference you heard by putting wet effects between amp and cab? Does it sound more like a real amp or sth? I thought wet effects always supposed to be put after the cab, but
There is no right or wrong answer here, just preference.
If you put FX before the cab, the cab acts as an EQ on your FX. And if it’s mono, it also sums them to mono. This is the more traditional way, since it emulates how you recorded guitar back in the day.
Putting FX after the cab is used more often these days and pretty much does what you would do in the studio typically.
I would say that generally speaking FX after a cab sound cleaner, clearer and can be more present, since they are the last thing in the chain. That’s why it is my preference. But it has the drawback that if you play through a real cab, you might have to adjust everything.
Got it, thanks for the clear explanation and for the tip
