Hey guys Ive mixed and mastered a song on the QC, tell me what you think about the it. Im new to mixing so any criticism is appreciated.
@criduchat If this is you “new to mixing” then I think it’s a fantastic first crack at it. Well done! Few thoughts:
- On my monitors, I specifically appreciate the low-end — nothing boomy, and with high gain recordings the noise from around 100-200Hz can creep up on you. Not the case here, it was reading with nice levels
- The overhead mics for the cymbal work are really compressed… if this is what you were going for, then no worries! I mean, I get it… it’s metal, after all. Good compression for such bright sounds is all but necessary, but I avoid squashing the hell out of the cymbal work. But that’s just my approach — if your ears love this, then it’s right
- I can’t recommend Voxengo Span enough when mixing. One: the free version works amazingly (but SpanPlus, the paid version, has more features and is quite inexpensive if you find the free version useful). I was turned on to it by a colleague, and it’s running during every mix session now. It offers full spectrum analysis of recordings, multi-tracks, on deck LUFS metering, and a host of other helpful tools depending on your version. They have a mastering plugin too worth checking out. I basically have this open during a mix session and it helps me pinpoint exact frequencies that need carving out or accentuating, with clear visual representation. Check it out(Voxengo SPAN Plus - Spectrum Analyzer Plugin VST, AU, AAX)
Those are my two cents! Well done, and the more you mix the better you get. If this is your “ground floor” so to speak, I’m sure your mixes will only improve in their professionalism ![]()
