QC modulation devices VS the real deal

Well, hi

Let’s discuss the modulation effects a bit.

I find the choruses good, except for the stereo processing. Im not really sold on the phasers and flangers, so I’m thinking of getting a 117R pedal. I haven’t ever own one, though, so I don’t know if there will be a big difference to the QC.

Overall, I think modulations could use an update. What do you think? If you have any experience with the real effects the QC devices are based on, how do they stack up? Am I wrong and uninformed?

I’m a modulation junky. I get bored easily if my guitar sound isn’t swirling around or moving in some way.

I use a lot of external pedals with my QC–including modulations like the EHX Small Clone chorus, Earthquaker Devices Pyramids flanger, Boss MD-500, and I recently got a Strymon Zelzah phaser. I also use a bunch of the modulation models in the QC.

When the QC was first released, users tended to not like the earliest batch of basic modulation effects. After that, NDSP started modeling newer modulation blocks after real pedals and the sound quality improved a lot.

Yes, the QC’s model of the M117R flanger sounds very close to an old MXR M117R that I had, or what I remember of it anyway. The MXR Phase 90 model is simple and good. My favorite of the pedal-based models is of the Boss Dimension DC-2W.

Also, some of the “non-pedal” modulations that came later, are stellar. The harmonic tremolo is top notch, and the recent pattern tremolo is great as well.

Go with the MXR if you like, but you may find that the already QC captures its character.

Like the original Spring reverb, there are a few mod blocks that don’t quite live up to their real-word counterparts (the rotary block in particular) but may see improvement down the road

I think the modulation Engines are the standouts, I’m glad to see they’re continuing to develop those. They give you lots of deep options for tweaking and a wide range of possible tones, even though they don’t necessarily mirror a real-word physical pedal.

There may not be Chase Bliss or OBNE or Meris- level wet fx on the QC yet, but an approach that can get you closer is combining blocks. Packing fx together or experimenting with series vs parallel combos can yield some really cool results.

The latest update proved NDSP can surprise us with some cool unexpected additions; I’m sure there will be more to come

I have A-Bed the QC vs my original, early 80s Boss CE-2, and it’s impressively close, to the point that it’s impossible to tell them apart, especially in a mix.

The DC-2w model is amazing as well. As is the new Micropitch engine. I also really like the MXR-style phaser and flanger as well as the harmonic tremolo. Only one I’m not entirely sure about is the rotary, but the rest is just solid, very good even.
