Problem with the quad cortex though boss katana ( bypassing the pre amp )

Hello,
I wonder if anyone is experiencing the same issues.
I use my QC through my boss katana mk2 , bypassing the pre amp.
As soon as I bought the QC I was a bit frustrated with the factory presets, they sound a bit muddy.
I have tried also using a headphone, but the sound was even more warm specially there is far more bass than I would have wanted.
Than today I bought a preset, really nice, in the YouTube video from Tone Ranger, , its a preset using a Fender Super Reverb, since I was not happy with the Fender Amps in my QC.
Watching the video I have realized that the sound in the video is far more bright and clear than from my QC / Boss mk2.
Since I have tried headphones as well, im concerned if I should buy a Fender FR10 or 12 , but maybe still get the same problem.
Not sure if anyone has any suggestions, or tips on what I can do to fix that.
Thanks in advance.

Other people’s presets always involve their guitar, their rig, their room, and their fingers. They are not dialled in for your guitar and rig.
You will always need to dial in a tone to your own taste, based on your own gear. Use the emulated amp’s EQ to reduce bass and increase treble to your taste. Use EQ to bring in a bass cut if required. Don’t just accept what is there as “set in stone” - turn a few knobs!

Hey hey.

Well I have older Katana amp and they are a bit different than typical combo. What I found that works best for me is to bypass cab sims and apply EQ with low and hi pass filter(cab sims can set tone to muddy or dark). This way I was able to get that Katana speaker to sound like itself. Then I can EQ them in amp section to sound basically how I want them to sound (Katana speakers are more like frfr speakers and might require eq work)

For example same preset I got on Katana sounds a bit different when played with my 2x12 cab ( v30 loaded). To get similar tones, I need to dial down bass and go overkill on treble.

Thanks.
By bypassing the cab sim, you can just not add them right ?
And could you send a picture of how you set your EQ with low and hi pass?
Thanks again.

Hey,

I am not home for few days so I cant send a photo, bit a quick guideline

Yes, what I meant by bypassing them I meant remove cab sim blockbfrom patch or turn it off.

My quick guideline. New empty patch and just add amp sim in the middle. I got a bit odd issue with my setup so I use global EQ but you can do the same with EQ block added right after amp sim block.

In the EQ (it can be block in patch or global EQ) just set up hi pass filter on 1st block in eq. You can star the cutoff frequency to something like 80 or 60 for start. In the 5th block in EQ set low pass filter. You want the curve start going down on about 3k-4k frequency and go down. You can adjust them later to your liking . Katana speakers have very unique sound and sometimes they need some massaging with EQ to get them sound great.

Thats the base of my EQ. With this you might be able to get your Katana speakers natural sound without cab sim flavour. This might help to remove that muddy sound from cab sim and amp controls are more responsive. Thats my way of doing presets for katana.

I found that solution when I was dealing with my issue. I have a bit odd issue that when I connect my QC to amp head+cab or katana without this EQ or cab sim - any distortion sounds like line6 or metal zone. Super high pitched fizzy screaming zzzZzzZzz but when I apply this EQ or cab sims it goes away. Like my amps would try to push higher frequencies than cab can take.

Thanks for the suggestions, will try that now.
Hopefully it works as you say, cause im a bit frustrated, and thinking about buying a Fender FR10 or at least try it with my Quad Cortex.
If not im thinking that there is small chance that my QC is buggy.

Something like this ?

Hey there,

Yep, something like that. It acts like an cab sim but without actual cab sound flavour. You might want to adjust the filter in the 3k range - some guitars and amps might sound better with higher or lower value. Just own preference. I got my Katana combo sound like katana(i am pluging into line in/power amp, not guitar input). If you like high gain sounds you can play with the highpass filter to tighten low end.

it was better, but still the same problem.
I will contact Neural DSP.
Thanks Matte for all the help.

Do you use DI captures / disabled cabs? Else you doubling up on a guitar speaker in your chain…which would result in dark and overly compressed results.

Not sure if this is helpful, and if you have already done this, then obviously this is not the cause, but have you adjusted the input impedance to 1 meg? The only reason I think of this is you said you have always found the QC to lack high end and sound muddy. Just a thought…

What input impedance should be the best one, 1 meg ? I can try different settings here, if you think that is the case.
