New QC user… first live gig coming up

Hello folks,

I recently switched from a fractal FM9 to a QC.

I’m enjoying it much better.

The amplifiers sound better and feel better. And there’s less controls to fiddle with to get good sounds. I also love being able to adjust directly on the front panel so I can make changes on the fly.

My one question I have is,

I wanna make sure my volume is loud enough on the gig going through the front of house. I had issues with the fractal with front of house volume. I run a monitor separate and it always sounds fine to me. I do not use any ears.

What advice can you give me to ensure my volume is loud enough through front of house. I use the volume knob on my guitar to vary my volume, say between rhythm and solos. I don’t want to rely on patches to adjust my volume.

I’m gonna keep it simple this time. I’m just gonna have two or three scenes. Somethings similar to just using my tube amplifier and a couple of pedals.

Any other advice you can lay on me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

I switched from FM9 to QC because the FM9 was a little too much to navigate live if you had to tweak a setting… too many clicks and pages to scroll through. Haven’t looked back since switching.

You should be able to click on the outputs and see what/how your meters look. Then if I need more stage volume I reach down and turn up the monitor instead of adjusting the master volume knob on QC.

Keep the volume knob to maximum, adjust you preset (including scenes) right below max to have the max volume without clipping. Enjoy your first show with it!

I use the QC for 3 years now and it’s been a blast since then.
Playing live with it is a great experience, i’m the first one who is ready for soundcheck, my levels are consistent through rehearsal and shows and i always get compliments from FOH for my clean signals :innocent:

Welcome to the forum, Rodcat.

You should have no problem. There is more than enough gain available from my QC to drive the XLR inputs on our Presonus board. I made a pair of TRS to XLR pigtails that I leave connected to outputs 3 & 4. I prefer to assign the volume knob to only control 1 & 2 (feeding my FRFR cabs), that way I have a consistent level feeding the board. I have outputs 3 & 4 set to -10 which gives a good strong signal to the board while still allowing wiggle-room at the board’s input gain(s). This level has worked whenever we’ve had a sound company mixing us as well. Of course, the correct output setting for you will depend on how how hot your presets are. If you need to make adjustments, simply swipe down from the top of the screen to open the input/output settings page and select (tap) the outputs you want to adjust.

A few tips:

  1. When setting up a preset, many QC owners have a specific target dB setting on the output in addition to turning the volume knob up to maximum. Personally, I like a target of -12 dB maximum; this gives plenty of volume without hitting the red in the QC’s output. Any sound person should easily be able to mix this by applying gain, etc.

  2. It’s a good idea in general to add a compressor block at the end of whatever signal chain will go to the board / FOH. Try the SSL compressor with a ratio of 2 (a light amount). This will help keep some transients within boundaries when going direct. I don’t typically need it when sending signal to my power amp + cab.

I usually send a direct signal from the QC to FOH, and I monitor thru the fx return of my tube amp. For me, the best of both worlds. FOH loves the sound coming directly from the QC, and I love hearing my QC thru a tube power amp.
