TLDR version: Try the MXR Classic 108 Fuzz for silicon Fuzz Face goodness that can exist in your FX Loop.
Hello all. First time poster, but I felt I could contribute in a small way. During my research into buying a QC, the most unclear thing for me was its ability to play nicely with fuzz. There are many opinions and the deeper I went, the more confused I became. Eventually, I just bought the QC mentally prepared to not like any fuzz with it.
Two months into it here are the things I would tell the past version of me:
- Fuzz pedals in front of the QC work for the most part. They have some weird squeals and they don’t feedback like on a real amp, but that’s expected.
- The built in fuzz models are quite good should only get better with future updates.
- Fuzz capture can’t replicate the gating. This is its own rabbit hole, but don’t buy a QC hoping to faithfully capture fuzz.
- For Fuzz Face fans, there is a really great solution. The MXR Classic 108 Fuzz!
The Classic 108 is basically the Silicone FM3 Fuzz with an extra button that allows it to sit behind a buffer and still behave like a fuzz should.
I have it at the front of my FX Loop with a couple of other OD pedals after (Classic108, DoT, Plumes, Rat). Just like any proper Fuzz Face, I dime both knobs and control the fuzziness with the guitar’s volume knobs. It cleans up as it should. Blooms when you dig in. It will even lightly sputter and spit when pushed. It is the exact solution I needed for my basement noodling. It makes me giggle with its sustain. Just need someone to do the buffer trick to a Big Muff.
Happy picking!
