For the Beginners: A Brief Introduction to DSP

“…wait, so, what’s DSP again?”

With that question, this post was born. For quick context: at my day job, I work in the realm of a/v integration as a purchaser. That means I work with all kinds of companies that offer DSP solutions (Biamp, Q-SYS, Atlona, etcetera)… and whenever we talk about DSP, we’re looking at what the project requires and how to match the best product to the application to make sure the client is happy (this includes any kind of commercial install you can think of, big or small!). Fast forward a bit, and I’m catching up with my good friend that I haven’t seen in a few months. We’re both musicians so I tell him about what I do at work vs at home and how no matter where I go, DSP is in my zeitgeist. I’m also an owner of a Quad Cortex, Nano Cortex, and Archetype Nolly, and was talking about how I appreciate Neural’s ecosystem for my style of playing/writing/messing around, and he asked a pretty critical question after about 10 minutes of hearing me ramble: “…wait, so, what’s DSP mean again?”

Well, isn’t that a hell of a question! I like the way our programmer said it: “Digital signal processing is simple until it’s not.” And thankfully, minds smarter than myself have spoken to this before, so instead of regurgitating what’s already out there, I thought I’d share some rudimentary online resources here and post some links for people to read up on, perhaps to educate themselves on the basics of DSP and what it means for us as musicians. I mean, look: there was a time I didn’t know how to tune a guitar… let alone dial in a capture. We were all beginners once. And sometimes the world of modelling can appear to have a barrier to entry (though that itself is up for debate elsewhere). At any rate, having a few basics underneath your belt is only going to serve you well in the long run. And if you already know this stuff, try to pass on your own knowledge with other resources to keep the learning train choo-chooing along. Just, you know, cite your sources  We like facts over feelings!

Therefore, outside of just sending this to my friend (speaking of which: Chris! You can knock this out easily over a lunch break!), I figured I’d share it with everyone else as well. If you leave it even just the slightest more informed, then it was a success. Here’s a good jump off point:

And at the bottom of the page from the link above, there are a few more links to further reading (and the wiki page isn’t half bad to boot…). But the real winner is the Analog website (A Beginner's Guide to Digital Signal Processing (DSP) | Analog Devices), so definitely check that one out as well.

Like I said, if you know it already, then I’m stoked for you! This is tailored more for the people who have an interest in this kind of stuff and want to know more, but don’t know where to start. And if you’ve got any videos, links, websites, podcasts that add to the discussion (there’s plenty of awesome resources posted all over this forum), then feel free to chuck it below! I know at the very least, my buddy will appreciate it. Cheers everyone!
