Easy switching presets qc mini

Hi everyone,

I’m loving the QC mini. New user here. I’ve been wrestling with the setup though. I want to use it live during a show and I want to use presets per song. I’ve been searching everywhere but I can’t seem to find a way to use the buttons for simple ‘previous/next’ preset switching. I can only use the footswitches to change 4 presets, unless I press two footswitches at the same time to change the bank. This way I can use 8, but we have 20 songs in our set. I don’t want to press 2 switches at the same time during the show, it’s a risk and don’t have time for that during our show. Does anyone have a solution for this? If not, gonna have to send it back. And if if does work on the big brother QC, might have to go for that one in the end. thanks in advance!

Not sure about the QC mini, but this is very easy with the normal QC

The “big” QC has buttons for “next / previous preset” - plus, with its additional buttons and form factor, it’s overall IMHO the better device for live gigging. I like the fact that I have direct access to 8 scenes per preset instead of “paged” 4+4 with the mini.

You can work your way through with the mini, but there are more compromises involved, due to the reduced number of buttons, like working across “pages”, pressing two buttons at the same time or long-pressing buttons. I agree that this isn’t something that you would really trust in a live situation - too much that can go wrong, and suddenly you’re starting out a song with a completely wrong guitar sound…

One option for you might be to add a very simple external MIDI pedal to your QC mini just for switching presets. Not sure if connecting an M-vave Chocolate (the cheapest option) via USB works with the QC mini, but there are other affordable options, e.g. the Hotone Ampero Control, with “traditional” MIDI connectors. Or maybe a simple and cheap two-button Hotone Pulze Control - just for “preset up / preset down”.

TBH, if gigging is your main focus for the QC, I’d whole-heartedly recommend investing the additional cost for the “big” QC.

Yeah, honestly the normal QC is way better for touring than the mini. I see why the mini is good, but it’s very limited in footswitch functionality. This doesn’t matter for people who just rack the unit with midi changes, but otherwise it’s a lot more limited when you actually want quick footswitch adjustments instead of weird workarounds that don’t make sense during a live set

Thanks for the quick replies! I do love the fact that it’s small and easy to transport. But the fact that it lacks this simple preset switching is astonishing. I’ll explore the midi footswitch thing, a small switch just to go preset up/down would fix everything.

Another solution is to switch presets with your iPad. I use my iPad to arrange my setlists and when I switch to a song, it changes my preset on the QC. You just need a wireless midi adapter.

Since my bandmates tend to spontaneously change the setlists, this is very helpful.

I’m not sure you can advance thru Presets with MIDI switches. I know you can choose a specific one, but I thought there wasn’t a midi command for +/- from the Preset you’re already on.

I’ve never tried it, so I can’t say for sure- can someone else confirm?

My understanding was that this is one of the big weaknesses of the way the QC assigns most functions to switches

Correct - after checking the manual: there isn’t a CC assigned to “next preset” or “previous preset”. So it might not be possible to use a simple two-switch pedal. But the M-Vave Chocolate can be set to a simple “program mode” where it sends 128 program change commands by going through banks of 4. In that mode, you simply use the Chocolate to select the preset on the QC, then use the buttons on the QC for scenes.

Morningstar controllers have PC or CC value scroll which increases/decreases the PC/CC value each time you press it which can give you next/prev preset capability.

Has anyone tested it yet by any chance? I’m about to send it back and get the bigger brother, just to be sure

I used the Luminite Graviton M2 to create a setlist/song/song part function that allows me to cycle through all parts of a song with a single button. This works quite well, with a few minor limitations. Only for songs with more than 10 changes do you have to split the song into two parts, and the setlists go up to 12 songs. For longer setlists, you have to split them up accordingly. I did this with the large QC, but since it runs via MIDI, it should also work with the small one.

It’s a shame that NDPS didn’t really think this through with the Mini, and above all that so many people seem to be putting up with it by claiming that it fine because the mini is just for a small target group or that you could just buy an external controller or that everyone like to make doublepress button or no one has problems with switiching banks inside one song at a live performance. People would rather tear their hair out than spend a minute thinking about whether the Mini could be supplemented with a software feature that would allow it to be used live on its own and without additional controllers.

It would be so easy with a reasonable setlist/song/sonpart function. But no one seems to be interested in it. Especially since the implementation wouldn’t be that complicated. If I can build a prototype for such a function in HTML and Java-Script in 30 minutes, it shouldn’t take a developer more than a week to program something like that, even for a more complex system. And the Mini in particular would benefit greatly from this.

Take a look here. Maybe you’ll vote for it.

Yes you can advance through presets on the QC with a midi floor controller…. I use an fcb 1010 and it works for me…to the original OP there’s lots of controllers out there but if you decide to get a behringer fcb1010 I’ll send you a Sysex file for it

Love this idea! Could you provide some details on your setup? Thanks.

Sure!

I use an ipad with ForScore to manage my setlists (incl. lyrics / lead sheet for each song). But there are many other Apps for that as well, you just need to check that they can set midi messages.

I program ForScore to send messages to select the preset when I switch songs on the iPad.

You can connect by USB cable, but I used a wireless midi adapter the CME Widi Master on the QC, which costs around 50€.

What is really nice is that in the past I had to switch to the next song on my iPad and then do the tap dancing on the QC.

Now it’s only a quick press on the ipad.

Don’t hesitate to ask if you have further questions.

Thanks, Andy! I use MobileSheets on an Android tablet. It should be able to do the same thing. Great idea!

On the full size QC you have access to 8 presets per bank, and you do have Preset Up and Preset Down footswitches, so that would fix your problem.

BUT, and it’s a BIG BUT, you then encounter another problem, one which I think is THE ABSOLUTE worst feature of the QC and which I, and others, have been banging on at Neural to change for the last 3 years since I bought mine - and of course in typical Neural fashion, they have ignored this very valid request. The problem I’m talking about is that in order to change Mode on the full size QC you have to press the Tuner and Preset Down button at exactly the same time - which introduces the significant risk that if you accidentally press the Preset Down f/s a fraction of a second before the Tuner f/s then you accidentally change Preset right in the middle of your amazing solo. It is the dumbest thing about the QC, it could have really awful consequences, and there is a simple solution, which is to add a menu option to make Preset changing a long press only. But as I say, Neural haven’t listened. The possibility of doing this when playing live makes me so nervous that I’m actually considering switching to the QC Mini if it uses a different f/s combination to change Mode, but from what I see it doesn’t….

In fact, one person on this forum was so bothered by this he has posted a 3D printer file for a footswitch blocker, which goes around the Preset Down f/s, so you simply can’t accidentally press it. It’s like a plastic doughnut, it has a hole in the middle so you can operate the f/s with your finger but not your foot, and it works brilliantly.

Your best solution then would be to use Midi; I now have my full size QC set up with a WIDI dongle, which is paired with my iPad running StageTrax 3.
Now whenever I select a new backing track, every function I need happens automatically on the QC via wireless Bluetooth; for example just by selecting the backing track I want, the WIDI commands will select the correct QC Preset, Open Gig View, Open Looper U/I at the specific point in the song, start Looper Record, Start Looper Overdub etc etc. It’s a foolproof and safe way to do things, and it’s now the ONLY way I use the QC live these days, all of which has led me to the conclusion that the QC is a great studio tool, but not actually that great for live use, and it seems the Mini is even less so.

Of course this may not help you if you don’t use an iPad/Backing tracks etc, but another option if you only have a small MIDI footswitch is to assign the MIDI switches to change Mode, so you don’t have to double press on the QC itself to do this, then keep the QC in Preset Mode for changing Presets on the QC itself. You then don’t need a Preset +/- Midi command.

And the last option of course if you do use backing tracks and don’t want to faff about with Bluetooth dongles etc is to get a Helix Stadium, and use Showcase to fully automate everything!
