hi All,
Since switching to neural DSP, originally via Mac and then via Nano, it’s been a couple of years since I played a tube amp. But I got a good deal on the orange cab and pulled my Tiny Terror out of the attic. Played about 3 hours and thoughts -
- The clean tone was very similar to Nano
- Turning off Nano cab and amp sim worked well into the front end of the Tiny Terror. There wasn’t much noise and I didn’t notice any tone suck.
- Nano overdrive and delay worked well into the front.
- Using Loopy and IPad with Nano into Orange, the tone does change with loops because the rhythm tracks affect the lead. This can be quite cool.
- I spent a lot time either playing the Tiny Terror on its own or with drums (not looping)
- As I had no overdrive pedal and a Strat with relatively low output pickups my hand got tired
- Overall I found the sound better with the amp. I thought I played louder on average and expected ringing ears which I now have
- I know it’s a cliche but there were some moments of really squidgy sounds particularly on lower string riffage that sounded alien to me because it’s been so long since I played a tube amp
- I might invest in a Db meter.
Overall this has confirmed my original reason for going down modelling route that it works brilliantly for looping / recording / with tracks without needing excessive volume.
When you start adding in the excellent NSDP FX the gap reduces to near zero.
For rhythm or overdriven lead without FX and for general fun I preferred the amp. However I won’t be pulling out my Notaklon / JHS Double Barrel out of the attic anytime and rebuilding a pedalboard anytime soon because the effected sounds of Nano are top notch.
Interested to hear thoughts!
Cheers Ben
