Quad Cortex. Should I buy it?

Hi guys,
I’m on the market for a modeler and I’m considering the QC.
At present I own a slo 100 and an Ox Uad to play and record but I’d like to add the QC. I will use mainly with headphones and as audio interface.
I’m reading mixed reviews about how it sounds, how it sounds against fractal, bugs and lack of communication so I thought I’d ask you directly.
Tell me everything about QC
Thank you

Hello and welcome to the forum.

After years of carrying heavy AC30’s to venues, pedals, effects rack, etc the QC was the only unit that allowed me to keep all of this at home.

Absolutely love and recommend this unit.

I totally recommend it as well. We have 3 in my studio/band.
That said, it all depends on your tastes and needs. It’s possible that it’s overkill as just an interface w/ headphones.
Are you in a location that allows for a ‘test-drive?’ Sweetwater in the US has a return policy that lets you try it out and ship it back if it’s not to your liking.

It still has a little way to go to be fully mature and as it was intended to be according to specs pre-release, but it’s SO CLOSE to being there. Now’s a good time to get onboard if it suits you.
What DAW and computer do you use?

Thanks for the reply.
Mac and Protools. Yes I know it might be overkill because i would only use it with hp and for recording but i don’t care. I do the same with a real slo and the ox.
How is the quality if the modeling? And how does it sound through headphones?

I love my QC. It’s completely changed the way I set up my tones, carry gear to gigs, and even perform.

I can also say that, after being in this forum for nearly a year and a half, I have seen Neural include new features that people have requested. They are definitely paying attention to what users want.

I would recommend running a search for “headphones” in this forum–it’s a frequent topic here and a lot of users have widely varying experiences. [I personally don’t use headphones or the headphone jack with my QC.]

With decent studio headphones it sounds great, in my experience.
The modeling is fairly accurate and very flexible.
Many find the captures to be the real treasure of this unit, providing a satisfying feel and tone.

Capturing my guitarist bandmate’s full rig is what convinced him abandon his tube-amp/giant, multiple-pedalboard purist ways. He felt like the all-in-one captures of his pedals/amp/cab were close enough to retire the physical gear for now. Winning him over to the QC was a big deal for me, he was very “anti-modeler” previously.

I’m sure captures are great but i’m more interested in the modeling.
I’ve had the Kemper years ago and finding a good profile in line with the sound i have in my head was not that easy. Said that, the capturing side of the QC is interesting because i could capture my own soldano.
Good to hear that it sounds good with HP.

Hi Ale,
I’d say yes !!–because it’s still being developed. It’s about to bring thing to a new level. Out of the box right now, I’d have to say the QC will do anything you need it to do. I wonder if you would share some things your looking for the QC to do?

Basically I need good sounds, not too much fx but big crunch to distorted sounds with reverbs and delays (does qc has shimmer reverb?), good headphones sound (hp directly to the QC) and the possibility to use it as soundcard for recording (guitar, bass and vocals).
That’s it. I might need a million of other stuff but I like it simple
As I said before, I am a little scared by various issues i read on the forum/internet (hp, noises, grounding issues) so I’m trying to clear my mind on what to do: buy it or not

The QC grounds via the XLR connection to speakers, not via its power supply. This can cause noise when using headphones alone.

Hi,

I am very similar to you. I bought to use 95% of the time as a practice tool using QC, headphones and power supply.
I was very disappointed in the fact that you need to connect to another piece of gear to ground the unit. For me and plenty others here it is not usable on its own due to the hum/ground noise. A noise gate does help but cuts off your trailing notes as had to be a heavy gate. If you want a pure standalone device get the Fractal FM 3 or 9 as it is earthed fully.

However if you are happy to have it connected to another grounded monitor or guitar amp then it is an amazing unit. Sounds and effects are awesome but be aware if you want to use it with just power and headphones as it’s not great.

Ok. This might be a serious problem. Is there a power supply I can buy to avoid this problem?

many report that connecting via USB (which you have to do to use it as an interface) completes the ground from the computer. I’ve never had the noise or grounding problems- it’s not something everyone experiences, it may have more to do with your environment. Tthe CIOKS DC7 power supply is a common choice among QC users, but it’s expensive

There is a shimmer reverb, it can go up or down 2 octaves.

There is no power supply that can fix it as the power input is only a barrel connection. Therefore there is no way to add a 3rd wire for the ground. It has to be connected to another device either via usb(grounded pc) or xlr/trs output.

Connecting via USB should be adequate for grounding.

I don’t gig anymore and missed playing my Mesa-Express 5:25+ at home in the studio at the volumes, thus the tone and feel, at gig volumes. I did several captures of the settings I used and they are my favorites to use now. It is amazing how accurate is the capture, that I can turn it down, even at 5 watts the Mesa is LOUD, to manageable volumes and still have lots of headroom and tone.

When I did my captures all I did was lay my Sennhasuer gig mic on the front like I did when playing out let the QC autolevel and then run. That’s it. Have done several pedals now and have about duplicated my gig rig as far as overdrives you may have already read you cannot capture modulalation or time based pedals. Now I don’t use alot of those but the QC certainly gives me what I need.

I was using an Eleven Rack which is still a good unit with a great feel to it but have almost uniquely used the QC since I got it. Still just fun to go in and play with. I also run my Taylor acoustic through it with good results. I also use mine as a desktop and have a Midi Captain on the floor. Even modified the buttons to be more like knobs.

Absolutely buy it. No issue with power supply from my perspective. It’s the single best musical purchase I’ve ever made. And I’m a tube snob. For the sound and for the gigability, nothing close. This gear will make you smile regularly.

Yes but from my understanding it would be unusable for practicing/I have to plug it into my mac everytime.
Do you use hp directly into the qc?

Watch this before buying. As you will see it is fully fixed when grounded but is an absolute pain in the but having to do this.

Wow… that’s bad.
