QC Cortex + FX Return of Real amp = Fizz

Hello guys!

New to the forum and new to the Quad Cortex.

I want to run my QC through the fx return of my Peavey 6505+ 112 60W

I have a gate block, a 5150 amp block on the chain, no cab block, and eq and various effects for the different scenes.

My problem is that it sounds very bright and I also get some fizz, especially if i stand in front of the amp about 2-3 meters away. I tried EQ in the mid high section, and some passes, treble down, but then I lose clarity. Presence 3-4, resonance around 3

I build my presets normally on a small 1x12 cab at home through a GPA-100, but in the studio with my 6505 through a Marshal 2x12, I get the fizz and harshness.

Is it a matter of input and output levels? I use output 3 and am not clipping through there. Because my amp doesnt have a master volume (only post and pre), none of the controls on the amp work. So I have to turn up from the amp block inside QC. QC master volume knob is 100%.

Basically I want a full, chuggy sound that is not too harsh. Maybe its my fault, I only have the QC about a month and haven’t really spent much time yet, because of life stuff.

Just wanted to clarify if it’s a level or an EQ matter, or somethingI am missing out completely.

Great to be here, awesome forum.

Welcome to the forum, D.L. I’ve found that the best tool for controlling an edgy top end is a low-pass (high-cut) filter. Since you’re not using a cab block, I assume you’re using one of the parametric EQ blocks. Don’t be afraid to use a pretty low frequency setting on your low-pass filter. I’m using FRFR cabs so it’s a different animal but I sometimes I set the cut as low as 4khz to trim fizz. If your amps presence control sits after the FX loop, you might try turning it all the way down. The bright switch is probably before the loop but you might shut it off to see if it makes a difference.

Since the 6505 doesn’t have send and return level controls, try boosting the signal from the main output. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the input/output page, tap the outputs you’re using (3&4?) and adjust the output gain. Just keep an eye on the output meters to make sure you’re not clipping the main outputs. If you still can’tget enough signal, you might even try running into the input on the front of the amp and select the clean channel. You’ll need to dial your QC’s output level way back to avoid overdriving the front of your amp.

There are lots of folks using the QC, successfully, with a real amp so I’m confident you’ll find solutions.
