CA Duo CH3 Modern hi-gain quality issues after upgrade to 4.0.1

CorOS Version: 4.0.1

Describe your issue:
When I was trying to recreate Swedish Chainsaw sound I noticed issues with hi-gains in presets using devices and neural captures. I assumed this is caused by huge amount of gain and possibly some limitation of simulations / captures.

Today I was playing with CA Duo CH3 Modern with cab and no other devices and I could recreate something I call “digital” sound with gain as low as 2.3. I compared output with hi-gain settings in Nolly X plugin. Plugin output seems to be more natural and less digital to me (but I must admit here I had no intention of recreating exact same sound that I had in the preset).

As it is just an amp and cab without other devices and even with low gain settings of the amp seems to be off, I decided to file this bug report.

I wonder if it is a problem with amp simulation, Cortex unit or my perception.

Steps to reproduce your issue:

  1. Setup preset according to screenshots
  2. Play something

I expected this to happen:
When I compare CA Duo CH3 Modern wet signal with Nolly X plugin (preset: Savage, no gate, no resonance) output, Cortex sounds more digital and unnatural to me.

I have tried the following things:

  • I have tried to lower input gain
  • I have tried to lower input gain (in preset chain)
  • I have tried to lower volume on the guitar
  • I have tried another guitar
  • I have tried another cable

As a new user I cannot upload zip file with DI, wet cortex signal and nolly render, so I uploaded them here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IU5G9H5msZyeMoHQeaVgtvozbt-8ufJR/view?usp=sharing

The Dual Rectifier model on the QC is probably the most maligned of any Factory device (except maybe the old Spring reverb or Rotary effect). Most users seem to hate it.

those that do use it lower the Master setting on the amp to 1 or below. This tightens up the response and clears away the muddy rumble most users seem to complain about. It also helps to use a TS or Klon-type OD in front of it, just like the ‘real’ amp.

I think the majority of us are hoping for a remodeled Recto at some point. That said, there are some GREAT captures of it out there!

Just like @xush stated, this model is not great. It is odd, but you have to run the Master Volume at 1 or below for this model to even be usable. That being said, I would look at the captures for sure. I found some great Rev F captures that were good starting points. I ended up buying my own Rev F and capturing it because I couldn’t use the model or get it to my liking, because I knew what a DR should sound like. It’s ok, but run that master super low and you’ll way better results!
