everyone desperately wants to find a way to help, I love that about this form.
“There’s got to be a way to resolve this!”
Unfortunately that’s not always going to be the case, but I like that everybody wants to help.
I was also getting noise issues when using an old ass pair of headphones to play. However after getting a good pair of monitors the issue went away. Yes there is some noise if setting the amp to max gain (which happens with a real amp too) but with a default 40% gate it goes silent. What are you using as output?
Man…. You’ve basically hit the nail on the head here…. I’ve been troubleshooting this exact same issue for months. I posted in the forum. I tried all the hacks. I thought it was my guitar. I replaced my input jacks on all my guitars. I’ve had my tech re solder all my connections. I tried using xlr. Xlr to quarter.
I put it in different spots of my house. I hooked it up to my wife’s mac.
Nothing fixed it. I thought I was going crazy and now you come up with this and between this post and my tech saying “I think that’s something in the software” I’m a firm believer in it being a software issue.
I’ve sent my unit in once for a fix. They said they replaced a board. Which solved a faulty usb.
But now here we are. Same noise. Same issue.
I guess mines going back as well.
Yeppp. Same here man. I even purchased a pretty high end power conditioner to solve my issue. No go. Same problem
i saw rabea at the sweetwater thing he did a month or 2 ago. he had the same problem and the staff didnt listen to me on how to fix it. was pretty funny.
How do you fix it?
When you power on the unit, make sure you don’t have any ports in the back plugged in to anything, I believe specifically the outputs, (but i just keep everything unplugged).
Wait until the unit is fully booted up and ready for use.
Now attach the cables and like magic the sound is gone.
I’m told the unit does some kind of scanning at the ports when it powers on and having stuff plugged in causes the unit to take the ratings its pulling on the ports based on what it pulls at boot time.
I’m pretty sure it’s just the outputs but i only use outputs 1 and 2, and once i learned this i just don’t plug anything into it until it’s ready to use.
Works for me every time.
I hope this is your problem and solution.
I’d actually heard of this.
I believe I actually used that method for quite a while and it appeared to work ? Then it didn’t haha. That’s honestly how I turn this thing on every single time. I don’t even plug the usb in when I’m turning it on anymore
Okay, I’ll just unplug 11 cables when I boot up and then plug all of it back in again just to reduce noise.
I just do the 2 outputs when I’m at home lol but yeah this is what I’m relegated to. And as an added bonus when I power it off the noise kicks in until I disconnect the power supply
I’ve been doing the opposite:-) - I always make sure my FR FR cab and guitar are connected to the QC before I switch it on (I would’ve thought plugging stuff in to the unit whilst it’s on could potentially be harmful). Never had any noise/ground issues.
After reading this I’ll try disconnecting everything before powering on to see if I notice any difference at all.
I know what you mean. I usually plug things in before I turn the power on. I also power things on in the correct sequence: devices first, then powered monitors. The reverse for turning things off. It goes against best practice to plug things in while they are on.
Thankfully I don’t have this noise issue, but I guess I would try plugging things in after powering up, if it was the only way I thought I could get a noise free rig. A less than ideal workaround, particularly for pedalboards where everything is already wired up. Wondering how many people can confirm this works?
It worked for me.
For a while. Now it does not. I agree with it not being ideal. I guess I’m not sure how hard it would have been to just add a ground button on the back panel like basically everyone else does haha.
But yea. The noise he speaks of is a super huge bummer I’ve had mine for a year and a half. I’m in the talks with Sweetwater about trying to get a replacement to see if it’s just a couple of earlier units.
I have a feeling it’s a few covid units that got bad innards and it’s we are the unlucky ones who got that batch
I have to come back here and say that my words have been had for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I said I would eat them. Because I got a Fractal FM9 and am having the same issues I was having with the QC. As such, it’s safe to say that the QCs I got were not defective, and that I am having some sort of EMI/RFI issue. Although I am still stumped as to why I was not getting noise through my friend’s Hx Stomp. @Stinger22 said the Hx Stomp grounds differently, but is this really relevant? I ran my QC through balanced cables/monitors and there should have been no grounding issues, so why does the Hx Stomp not accentuate EMI/RFI (if that’s the case) under the same circumstances?
oh man, I’m not sure how to respond-- glad for the QC, but horrified for you personally. That is not good! But kudos for following up- we were all very curious what could be going on.
I’ve encountered a few unexplainable power-related glitches myself over the years, still scratching my head about some of them. Man I hope you can get the situation worked out!
Is there any chance someone not experiencing extra noise would be willing to upload a sample off their DI and a couple processed samples? Just so I can hear the discrepancy. And to hear that it’s possible lol.
Ensure you don’t have any LED lighting on and or near the QC as that can result in interference sometimes.
I was thinking about the same thing. I’ve been trying some of neural dsp plugins and I’m getting the same hiss that I get from QC. So, what do we do now?
Thank you for letting us know. This does take quite a bit off NDSP as well.
Here’s wishing you a speedy resolution to the problem. EMI/RFI issues are a real problem, but I think there are solutions for them too. Good luck!
Well actually the QC has the “different” ground than we normally see, using the outs grounding to another piece of equipment to find a ground, and that would be more a hum than a hiss I would think. I think QC posted that tha thelps avoid possible ground loops.
