QC Mini quiet and muddy

Hey everyone, I’m new to the QC Mini and I’m having some sound quality issues. I want to use the QCM primarally as an effects unit without an amp or cab sim. I have a PRS CE SE with stock split-coil passive pickups and a Blackstar amp with an effects loop. I love the sound of the PRS direct into the amp, and I want to keep as much of that character as possible, and also add some effects with the QCM. I primarily play on the clean channel.

As a first experiment upon unboxing the QCM, I loaded a completely blank preset, and plugged Guitar > QCM > Amp Input, with the input and output on the QCM set to unity (ie +/- 0db). I know there’s DAC happening, but I was expecting this to sound pretty close to a clean bypass, as if I had plugged into a standard stomp effects pedal and just had it switched off. But the sound I get is very quiet, muffled, and muddy. All the shine and harmonics are gone.

So my question is: is this the expected behavior for the QCM when hooked up in this fashion?

I know I can run the QCM through the amp effects loop and add an amp block for some marginal sonic improvement, and that’s fine, and I know how to do that, so I don’t need to be pointed in that direction. I know I can boost the input and output gain, to help compensate for the volume loss, but the tone is still flat. I know I can add EQ and effects to “restore” some of the sweetness to the sound, but that seems silly if I’m already getting good tone without the QCM in the chain, and just seems like “shiny garbage out” to me.

I’m just curious about this fundamental, most basic Guitar > QCM > Amp setup scenario.

Thanks in advance for any insight you all have here. I’ll follow up with some additional tone-related questions I have once I have a basic understanding of the above scenario.

Just having stuff at zero doesn’t mean it’s at unity with the Quad Cortex or Mini.

Also what setting is your impedance at? This could alter your tone a lot. Other thing to consider is cable length. Adding a longer cable with the QC in line can also change your tone.

The AD conversion with the QC isn’t what would be altering your tone like described. Realistically could be your cable, gain staging with the unit (you’ll need to compensate for the level adjustment the QC may have even with nothing in the preset), and impedance setting at the input of the QC.

Which output of the QC are you using? Do you have your overall output linked to the volume control of the QC? Most likely you have that engaged since it comes standard like that. You’ll need the output to be at 100.

So I have tried this with every modeler imaginable and the DAC definitely alters sound - analog is king. These things are great for convenience - but yeah nothing will replace what you get by tap dancing on your analog pedals.

Personally my ears adjusted to the sound and I like the scene changes with midi channel switching and it’s too convenient for me to give a damn. But your preferences may vary. Try throw in a boost or chorus or whatever effects you want and it will be fine.

Also crank the QC vol to 100 - any lower and it will stub the output specially in 4 channel or amp fx unit cases. If you haven’t done that already.

If the sound you’re getting is quiet and muffled, you’re most likely are going into your amp at a way lower volume than normal.
