Hi Neural DSP team,
I’m a Quad Cortex Mini owner and gigging guitarist writing to request a tap tempo improvement.
The current implementation, as documented in the Cortex Control manual, sets BPM based on the interval between the last two taps only. While this works in theory, in practice it creates a significant issue for live use:
Human foot taps are rarely mathematically perfect. If you only tap twice, any slight inaccuracy creates a drastic jump in Beats Per Minute (BPM). One imprecise tap mid-song can throw the tempo well off target, and the only way to correct it is to tap two more times cleanly — which isn’t always realistic during a performance.
Most professional modellers offer a tap tempo averaging mode that smooths the result across multiple taps. Fractal Audio, for example, defaults to averaging across 10 taps with an option to fall back to the last-2-tap behaviour. This makes live tapping far more forgiving and reliable.
Would it be possible to add a similar toggle to the QC Mini’s Tempo menu — for example, ‘Tap Mode: Last 2 Taps / Average’ — in a future CorOS update? This would meaningfully improve the live experience for many users without changing the existing behaviour for those who prefer it.
Thanks for considering, and for the great work on the platform overall.
Best regards,
I would love this feature too, as I always use tap tempo.
One caveat though - on the Helix, I find the averaging to be too much - as if it’s averaging 6 taps or so. i.e, If I start off too fast, it takes forever to correct the temp. I think it’d be great to have a parameter for the number of taps, and perhaps a curve or weighting value.
Interesting that no one has voted for this, includimg the 2 supporters.
Just did. the tempo value swings too wildly now using just the last 2 taps, so an average of the last X taps would actually be really useful.
Fractal also has max 10 tap. It refines as you tap. It works with 4-5-7 you dont have to tap 10. But if you can read the tap tempo. Qc has the best screen but lack of refining the tempo on live bit of an issue
It is very common feature. Even Q system had it years ago. Daws have it. Fractal, line 6, eventide all have the refining system
