Expression Pedal Favorites, Suggestions

Hey all,

Currently using a Boss EV-30 for expression, but I’ve been very underwhelmed with the volume “sweep” or range for swells. I do a lot of ambient verb/delay swells, and need a clean, smooth increase and it seems like most of the increase is happening from 50-100% pedal.

Is this a settings error? Or are there other pedals that may provide a better taper?

FWIW I have run a calibration and I believe I have the settings on the volume block set properly.

Thanks,
AP

I just got my first expression pedal to use with the QC a Dunlop DVP5 and when I plugged it in to use the Wah I noticed the exact same thing as you. The wah only changed in the top 50% region. If you go to expression pedal settings and change from Logarithmic to Linear it solves this issue.

some talk here about many users encountering the ‘dead zone’ on the EV30. And some who don’t, so who knows?

I like the Hotone Ampero Press II. Small but sturdy. Some find the switch useful, others not so much.

In a pinch, to get a smoother swell I’ve found you can put 2 vol blocks in a row and set one to linear curve response and the other to Log. Try that and see if it feels any smoother before you buy a whole new pedal. You can also tie in the amp vol or levels on other fx blocks so they all swell together- this can help smooth out the feel.

I used to have the same Boss pedal. It’s not amazing with the QC. There is a very strange sweep to them (yes I’ve used more than one of the same model). The Dunlop expression pedals have a better sweep, but I’ve gone through about 4 of them this year. They aren’t rugged at all

I have two that I like, the main one I use is the Mission Engineering EP1-BK-SPL, I like the auto return feature. That ensures I never forget to return to heal to shut it off. The other one is the Dunlop DVP5 Volume (X) 8 Pedal for stuff like volume where I want it to stay where I put it.

I have been happy with the Dunlop mini and the hotone soul press 2. I use the hotones as I like the side indicator lights.

If youre looking for non pedal exp, the Graviton midi system has a wireless remote that has 2 exp knobs.

Hi @apdogtown

Pretty alternative but maybe when there’s room in the budget I’ll get either the Fulcrum EXP pedal https://901sound.de/produkt-kategorie/fulcrum/ or the Black Mountain Expression Pedal https://blackmountainpicks.com/pages/expression-pedal

Have the EV-30 and am okay satisfied (not too much slack in mine) perhaps because it’s my first?

I love the size and sweep of the Dunlop mini. Honestly have broken 4 in the past year. Just from normal use. Some piece inside breaks easily and then the pedal loses and sort of resistance (and no I haven’t over tightened anything in it, just however it came from the factory)
