Thoughts on this model vs the physical amp?
A physical version of this amp (100w head) popped up on my local market place for a great price. I was within inches of purchasing with the intent to find and capture a great rhythm tone for metal on the blue channel. Before pulling the trigger, I thought i should spend some time with the model. Ultimately, I got some nice tones that pair well with my Mark V captures in a mix.
Would it be worth purchasing and capturing the physical head? The model sounds good to me but I’m curious about the general consensus on the quality of this model. Just as the Soldano plugin seems to be better than the soldano model, would the physical head be better than the model?
Cheers,
-Jim
I don’t want to sway your decision to purchase in either direction but I would say, a capture is only as good as the method you use for the capture.
If you’re experienced with mic’ing up a cab and have a good space for it, or if you have a unit like a Two Notes Torpedo Captor which can send out a line level signal, then it may be worth having the physical amp since you can create an endless amount of captures to suit your fancy.
That said, the different QC models of the EVH 5150 III are already awesome. So tight and punchy.

I think the models of the 5150III are pretty accurate to the head overall if you want to use that as a gauge to decide if you like it. That being said, the model definitely lacks some of the upper mid + high end grind that the real head has. The EL34 version of the 5150 III is definitely the best version of the III.

Cheers, brother.
I use a torpedo captor 8 to directly capture the head into the QC. From there I pair it with IRs. I love the process of tone shaping and capturing a physical amp, but if the QC model is accurate enough I can allocate the funds elsewhere
Thanks for the reply. Incredibly useful information. The 6L6 gets a lot of love but I think people are sleeping on the EL34
Hey Jim
Don’t quote me on this but the Gojira’s second amp I can say is probably that blue channel of the 5150III EL34 version. I have the amp and have compared the blue channel to every modeler on the market. I like it that much. The Gojira came the closest.
I still got the amp and have it plugged in right now but when I wanna just jam with headphones on - nothing like that plugin. It is also compatible with QC so definitely worth trying. The sound is all there - there is some bass missing but it’s definitely only audible if you A/B them. The amp itself is definitely magic and has an amazing volume knob - you can probably turn it down to apartment level right from the volume knob.

Hey Avira,
Thanks for the reply, this is brilliant. The first plugin I ever bought was gojira. That was ages ago and I forgot about it.
Spent last night playing with the rust amp and vs the model on the cortex, it’s substantial. Because the goal here is recording, I think you’ve made it unfortunately hard to justify the physical amp
.
I really appreciate the input. If you have any tips with the amp (sweet spot, master volume, etc.) let me know!
Cheers

This is probably the easiest amp to dial.
Blue channel takes Tubescreamers like a champ. Don’t be afraid to turn the presence wayyy down if it’s too harsh or fizzy.
Honestly hard to go wrong with the EVH - super easy to dial- that’s why I like it so much lol. You can try most settings pretty quickly.
I will say - use some Bogner Estacy cab IRs if you have them. The more smooth the IR - better the tone.
Also worth mentioning the red channel (third amp in Gojira) is awesome - turn presence and gain down though, it gets a little harsh with standard tuned guitars which is what I play.
If you want me to capture specific settings after trying plugin - let me know. I can do by next weekend.
