Archetype John Mayer on QC

I have just downloaded John Mayer plugin on to my Mac computer. I have never tried a plugin before. I really like a lot of the presets built into the plugin. I am tempted to buy it to install on my Quad Cortex, but I don’t know if it will sound the same and I don’t want to blow £199 on it and find it doesn’t sound as good.
Has anyone put it on their QC and compared it to their computer through the same monitors? Will I get all the artist presets installed onto the QC the same as in the Plugin on the computer?
Your advice is appreciated.

I can’t speak for the John Mayer X plug-in because I haven’t purchased the license for it (yet), but I do have several of the other plug-ins and they all sound stellar on the QC.

Yep, I’ll second that. I have Plini, Parallax, Rabea, and Henson. I’ve used Plini and Parallax a lot and love them on the QC (and as plugins). I have only barely started with Rabea and Henson on the QC since I just upgraded to 4.1.0 but I’m liking what I hear a lot. I think NDSP put a real effort into getting the same type of sounds out of the PCOM adaptions of the plugins. Took a L-O-N-G time but I am really happy with the dual value I can get out of my plugins. Next 50% sale (Black Friday?) I’m definitely getting Petrucci and either Mayer or Mish Mansoor.

I have the mayer plugin on the QC and my opinion is of all the plugins is they don’t sound exactly the same, either using another audio interface or the quad cortex as an interface (and yes I’ve tried the methods of how to match them) and using the plugins and going back and forward between the QC and plugin presets I’ve made and factory presets.. The lowend is less defined on the QC/not as full bodied and they just sound that bit better overall in the plugin… It’s kinda hard to explain but the punch you get from a quick strum in the mid range on the plugin is more life like more amp like… But having said that it’s not a huge difference and still have more testing to do and to make sure Im doing everything right and that settings are close as possible … I can still get great sounds from the plugin on the QC so I’m very happy

I totally agree. I have the Mayer, Petrucci and Plini and none of them sound exactly the same on the QC. That’s honestly a disappointment after such a long wait. I don’t know if it is related to the presets and it can be fixed tweaking here and there, but right “out of the box”, they are not the same.

This is strange to me. I have Nolly X and I can get the plugin version and the Quad Cortex version to null, meaning they are truly identical. I own Parallax, but haven’t tested that one yet. Those are the only two I own on the Quad Cortex, but I’d be surprised if the others also don’t null.

The main different will be the input gain on the Quad Cortex vs your input gain on your interface. That will drastically change the tone as the amp will be seeing different volumes. But if you set the input gain the same, I suspect the rest of the PCOM plugins will also null.

Yes I do have to do more testing just to double check I’m not missing somtin.. I don’t think I am but I’d like to come back and say I’ve figured out why and hoping it’s my fault . Using the quad as interface at the moment they are not exact

Done more checking today the funny thing is using a daw to test them reveals they sound different nothing within the daw has been added or changed… Just the minus 2.26 on the QC to match inputs usb3/4 out on the QC and in the daw the QC seems lower in volume and abit more compressed compared to the plugin… Remove the daw and use the plugin in standalone mode and compare it to the QC the QC now sounds better and the plugin sounds more compressed and lower in volume and again settings are were they should be and it’s the same preset… Unsure why this is happening.. I’m using the QC as interface…

The JM sounds awesome in The QC.

if there is a difference, until I have managed to switch between them, I have already forgotten how one sounds.

I would suspect this might have something to do with your interface, which is often a major component in the mix depending on the price point you’re at and the quality of the converters. Also anything else in the chain. But if you’re just raw dogging the plugin in a daw - there are multiple stages between that plugin and your monitors.

I’m using the QC as interface…and noticing the differences and I don’t think gain staging is the issue…so converters ain’t the issue either…I’ve done alot of back and fourth on it at this stage over the last few days… Also i’m not new to audio related gear and testing scenarios

I got sucked in and purchased the Mayer and Rabbea X. I have found that the sounds are identical to my ears. It’s a little awkward to figure out how to load them, but I was just being impatient and not giving the sync time to sync. The plug ins are amazing and let you play until you find a tone you like, you save it as a user tone and then drag it over to the QC in the plug in tab.

So new here. I’m on my second QC Mini, yea got stupid and sold the first one. Anyway I also have to John Mayer plugin. My question is how do you get the presets, as in the drop down menu presets into the QC. I see the amps and effects. But not the labeled presets. I looked online and read a few things saying make sure your up to date on everything and that everything is linked. What am I missing or do i have to go through every preset and do mimic each one of them.

It’s probably easier for me to send you this… And might be more direct and a step by step guide.

Thanks I knew I wasn’t crazy.

I’m glad I only use the plug-ins on the QC not as actual plug-ins… I don’t have to worry if they sound different.

I can’t see why they would sound different on the QC. Global EQ?
